My mother tends to gift presents like this
-Do you need a pullover?
-No, I don't need one
-But you only have one
-It's enough, I don't need more
-But look it's fleece
-For fuck's sake NO
-Why are you being like this, no is no

Some time later gifts a fucking pullover, gets offended when I start to loose it.
I wouldn't mind pullover as a gift, I don't need it but like whatever. But why do even ask?!

I have this issue with the older generation, too.

1) They don't believe that you know what's best for you or know what you want.
2) They believe THEY know, however, and will make the "right" choice FOR YOU if you behave stubbornly and refuse to pick the "right" choice.
3) HOWEVER, they want you to acknowledge that they're right about what you really want or need even though they're incorrect.
4) If you don't validate their "right" choice that they made for you, you're the bad guy.

At the point of asking she has already bought the thing.

Ironically at least a lot of the times no. I can judge by timing and packaging etc.
But probably she mind bought it already though.

That's my mom. Is this a universal mom thing?

I've more or less told my mom to gift her kids money if she wants us to appreciate any gifts from her or my dad. Sometimes she gets a fairly decent or thoughtful gift but most times they're trying to be practical but ultimately junk gifts.

Ha-ha, ultimate mom experience.
Tbf I wouldn't care about junk gifts! I am okay with that. But not hearing no for an answer hits me HARD
