I have this issue with the older generation, too.

1) They don't believe that you know what's best for you or know what you want.
2) They believe THEY know, however, and will make the "right" choice FOR YOU if you behave stubbornly and refuse to pick the "right" choice.
3) HOWEVER, they want you to acknowledge that they're right about what you really want or need even though they're incorrect.
4) If you don't validate their "right" choice that they made for you, you're the bad guy.
