Ahahah my grandmother (who also wanted me to be smaller and more feminine) did exactly this to me too, once, for Christmas. I think what saved me from a repeat attempt was that I'd also just gone through a serious growth spurt height-wise (that she hadn't noticed, I suppose?) so the frilly pink jumper also didn't reach my wrists or ankles (in addition to being too small everywhere else, too). It looked absolutely ridiculous. I insisted on wearing it for her for the whole holiday for her (because I was never going to wear it again) and telling everyone my grandmother got it for me and everyone could see how ill-fitting and horrendous it was - I think she was so embarrassed she never did it again.
