Re: The worst holiday gifts you've ever received.

My grandmother on my dad's side gave me presents for several years that were clearly intended to be judgy. Pink clothes, though she knew I hated the color, and always a size or three too small. Because I was a fat girl who wasn't girly enough.

Oh man, I'm sorry. That's such a classic Shitty Judgmental Grandparent gift. My mother would regularly "gift" me clothing that was too small and in the style that she thought I ought to be wearing, (pastels and beige, lady-like blouses and lots of floral motif skirts) for the same reason. Then she'd get mad when I never wore them because it was my fault for wasting money.

I'm so sorry, that sounds like it really sucked. It must be even worse coming from a parent. I'm sorry that happened.

Thanks. I know it's pretty messed up but I'm used to it. My mother is petite and slender and traditionally feminine and she's never gotten over the fact that I'm not a mini version of her, nor can I be molded into one. I just ignore her attempts and let her complain.

Ugh, that sucks. My grandmother was all that too. Plus very racist. She was pretty awful to my dad growing up too. I had mostly cut her out of my life before she passed a few years ago.

My GMIL never gives me gifts -- only Christmas cards -- but I feel like she would be petty enough to give me gifts like this if she did. My husband's grandma HATES me for some unfathomable reason, and no one in the family has ever figured out why.

Yeah, I always got clothes at least 2 sizes too small from my mother to "encourage" me. I'm not sure if it's worse that yours got you girly stuff to make you girly or worse that my mother got things specifically in my style so that I'd want to be thin.

Ahahah my grandmother (who also wanted me to be smaller and more feminine) did exactly this to me too, once, for Christmas. I think what saved me from a repeat attempt was that I'd also just gone through a serious growth spurt height-wise (that she hadn't noticed, I suppose?) so the frilly pink jumper also didn't reach my wrists or ankles (in addition to being too small everywhere else, too). It looked absolutely ridiculous. I insisted on wearing it for her for the whole holiday for her (because I was never going to wear it again) and telling everyone my grandmother got it for me and everyone could see how ill-fitting and horrendous it was - I think she was so embarrassed she never did it again.
