Unexpected likes/dislikes

(Anonymous) 2025-12-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
What's the last thing you read/watched/played/listened to that you thought you'd like but ended up disliking?

What about something you thought you'd dislike but ended up liking?

Automatic Noodle by Annalee Newitz

I saw it recced all over the place and people saying how cozy and found family and lovely it was, but I just finished it and was left pretty empty. It never really came together for me and then it just kind of ended. Idk, maybe my expectations were too high or maybe I just don't mesh with the author's style but it was a pretty unexpected dislike. Robots and personhood and found family are usually a win for me, but not this time.

all of my favorite bands have been putting out new singles in the last 2 months but all of them have been just meh. I got super excited that the Echoing Green is doing new music and even shows again!! but the first new single is just. okay. /shrug. I want to still love them but it's so meh. but so are the new tracks from Gunship, Celldweller, Fury Weekend, Carpenter Brut...they're all so uninteresting compared to the songs that made me fall in love with their music.

Same. My favourite musician was always on the fairly chill indie music train but lately, all he puts out is this bland sound carpeting that just ...exists. its just overall blah and not what made me love his music, more like a pale echo of it.

omg that's the best way to describe it. it just exists.

I get it, being able to at least make a living(ish) on your music in 2025 is the devil's luck, especially if you've been laboring in an indie sphere for so long you've been thinking about going back to pizza delivery, but ugh please I want to like you, musicians. I'm waffling on seeing Carpenter Brut live when they tour the US next spring, now, because the new stuff just isn't working for me.

>>What's the last thing you read/watched/played/listened to that you thought you'd like but ended up disliking?
Wake up Dead Man, the last Knives Out movie. Maaaan, than movie is so boring, predictable and useless it greatly irritated me. I enjoyed the other 2 movies and was looking forward to it, but in the end this last instalment ended up ruining my saturday night. I'm baffled by the positive reviews.

>>What about something you thought you'd dislike but ended up liking?
The first part of the new season of Stranger Things! I kind of hate watched the last two seasons and didn't even want to watch season 5, but decided to give it a go because my sisters want to have a watch part for the last episode. Incredibly enough I ended up quite liking the first 4 episodes! I skipped a little bit (something I usually never do with other series, but did a lot with the last ST season) and was a little bit bored in some scenes and incredibly frustrated for some characters/plot decisions, but in the end I had fun and can't wait for the next episode.
Biggest media surprise of the year for me, for sure.

Man, I thought Dead Man was way better than the second one! I loved it.

I'm glad you enjoyed that! But IDK I found all the characters, Benoit Blanc included, quite shallow and uninteresting. I also found the depiction of Catholicism quite boring and obvious (even if I appreciated the "clash of faith" between the two priests). The humour, that I found charming in the first two movies, completely felt flat in this one. I never laughed! Not even smiled once. I have the suspect it's because the movie is "too American", if it makes sense.

I think that's funny because it was so obviously filmed in the UK.

All of the Knives Out movies are American.

I meant American in the way they treated the themes and Catholicism, not the setting. The characters, too. Actually reflecting on that, the second instalment was probably the most Americanized in term of themes, but I'm deep into internet culture so I didn't mind that. I just enjoyed it for what it was. Maybe Catholicism through American lenses bores me to death, what can I say?

And yeah, the church being obviously NOT American architecture but being sold as that was pretty funny! I think they even pointed that out in the movie.

My roommate and I just watched it and she agrees with you that she likes it better than the second, but first is still top of the three. I disagree and was so bored during most of this one. I don't know what it was I just did not click with the narrative or characters at all.

I thought I'd love Sinners since I love the director and actors. My dislike of vampires is too strong unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-23 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Sinners but I didn't love it because I love vampires, which I do! That got me to watch it, but it was a good story with a lot of layers.

Sinners was such a mishmash of emotions for me, honestly the ending made me cry, but somehow I didn't leave the theatre knowing if I even liked it or not. It seemed to me more like a story that needed a series, not a movie. There were too many things that were unexplained, and so much more that needed more attention.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

Heard lots of gushing about it, loved the idea, it does have beautiful vibes, but the vibes are kind of all it really has going for it. The plot is extremely thin and the characters aren't very compelling or well-developed. It turns out I need a little more than great vibes to enjoy a story.

Agreed. Pretty cover, cool idea, but I can't remember a single damn thing about the plot or the characters. It was all concept and some whimsical language and that's it. So many novels seem that way these days - great concept, but actual writing is meh.

I liked The Electric Circus (by Timothy Lipton) much better.

It's about a young man making his way through the world. It’s set in two different time periods; it kinda switches back and forth. The circus part is a metaphor for the anxiety of modern life.

I thought I'd like Where Winds Meet because damn, finally a Chinese Wuxia game that made it out of containment. But I can't even say if I actively like playing it because I really want to start over with a new character and the game doesn't have the most basic function of deleting your damn character to start over. And I hate it. And it annoys me because I really wanted to start playing proper over Christmas and now I'm blocked by my own damn first character attempt.

Unfortunately the second season on Peacemaker. I'm only a couple episodes in, and it was weeks ago that I started watching. I don't necessarily dislike it that badly, but the first season was so shockingly brilliant. The comedy, line delivery, storyline, everything, was so fantastic that the second season seems like a completely different show. It's average overall so far, but comparatively it falls unbelievably flat.
Personally, I feel they weren't expecting the show to be so popular, but now that it passed some superficial high bar, it now has to live as part of the multiverse. They're desperately trying to repeat what peaked in the last season but they aren't exactly sure what it was that made it so good, and obviously now it needs a focal romance because now that the moneymakers are paying attention to it having the main girl and guy not have a will they or won't they bullshit relationship is just about essential.

Season 2 of Peacemaker sucked so fucking bad. Because it stopped shy of being good, so you hope that it will get better but it never does.
Romance was an absolute disaster, they killed characterization of both characters

Thought I wouldn't like but liked: Cobra Kai seasons 4-6

I stopped watching the show because I didn't like seasons 2 and 3 very much. While gift wrapping, I decided to try to finish watching Cobra Kai so I can tick a show off my "To Finish" list. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the show. Guess in the later seasons the show was able to balance out the tone and humor.
