Isn't the end result then that it's divergent anyway?

Or is it the same logic as tagging every ship that appears or is hinted at, even though only one is the main endgame?

If canon compliant is a way to signal a specific thing in that fandom, dropping the tag would mean it would be a surprise, most likely an unhappy one for the majority of the fandom.

Tagging "canon-compliant character death" for example would make way more sense than tagging simply "canon-complaint" in general then having the cast ride off into a totally divergent adventure, though.

I'm not doubting that fandoms have adopted various tags to memetically signal things, but a fandom specifically choosing "canon compliant" with no modifiers as a signal seems more like an exception than the rule.
