How do use ao3?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2025-12-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
The secret above has me wondering. I don't usually see fandoms I don't want to because I search by characters or ships. Not generally by tags that could have a ton of fandoms (unless I'm making a rec post).

Same. I don't understand people who read for tropes and go in fandom blind. That's not how fan fiction works!

lol that's exactly how fanfiction works for me!

You're just doing fiction. If you don't have even a passing familiarity with the characters or the world, it's just fiction. No fan about it.

I only do this for porn. Pick a smut tag I like and read whatever pops up.

I read fandom blind for rare tropes but not most.

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I read for tropes and also specific kinks that aren't too popular?

Re: How do use ao3?

I usually do character or ship. Sometimes, especially for slower or smaller fandoms, I'll just check the whole fandom tag and sort by last updated to see what's been posted.

Once in a blue moon I'll look for tags and sort by kudos or bookmarks, but I'm so picky about fandoms that's usually more frustrating than not. I tend to only do it for pretty small/obscure tags. For example, I did that awhile ago for age play because I was looking for the actual kink and all I kept finding in my fandom was age regression stuff, which is not my thing at all.

I actually have a bookmark folder for slow fandoms. One I check weekly and one for yearly.

I search by ships and the read anything that looks interesting, I’d never search by trope alone because for me I need to like the characters I’m reading about to even want to read fanfic of them in the first place.

That is how I am 90% of the time.

By canon/ship+genre, and usually excluding crossovers/multifandom. So I've never randomly run into something else when I'm not looking for it.

If I looked for "hurt/comfort" or something it's so broad it'd expect a mess. lol

I only exclude specific crossover fandoms. Like Danny Phantom when looking at dc fics.

Depends on the itch that needs to be scratched. If I'm searching for a kink or scenario by tag, idgaf about the fandom but I definitely will filter out fandoms I know I don't want. I've been in fandom long enough to have gotten bored with just fandoms I know, or annoyed by how much terrible fic there is in my fandoms, so branching out is just what happens.

There are a few tropes/kinks that I'll read fandom blind. Like sugar daddy. 😅

Usually I search by ships or characters. Sometimes I'll do a general fandom search. Very rarely I'll do a kink search if I really want to read a specific kink.

Only one I've done is the Silmarillion. Smaller fandom, sometimes I want gen fic.

Re: How do use ao3?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
I’m searching first for fandoms I like, then ships within those fandoms, and then specific tags. I know what I like and who, and that’s what I want to read.

Re: How do use ao3?

Ships
Specific character(s)
Fandom(s)

I can't imagine looking up fics based off a tag like "slow burn" and nothing else.

Re: How do use ao3?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I go into fandom tag. Also I start excluding things right away

Re: How do use ao3?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
My way of using is ao3 is posting some fic thats serious in a cracky way or cracky in a serious way once in a blue moon, every 3 years or so. today I remembered it exists because I got a bot comment on how soulful my 15 year old oneshot was. whats reading

Re: How do use ao3?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-30 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Rarely. It is hard to find stuff on it. The wall of tags and the lack of firewall between single fandom and multimegafandom crossover fics just makes it impossible to find stuff.
