Saw some Zootopia fanart with the characters as human versions recently with a White Nick Wilde and it looked so off to me. Never pictured him as White.

Honestly that doesn't even parse as "white" or "western" to me

I just see "generic light skinned orange hair animu sameface person whose given name is probably Watanabe Niki or something"

...which is not really a compliment to the artist either, I guess. Nothing about that image is Nick-like

This looks like every character in phone game ads. All they do is recolor and sometimes swap the hair. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen this exact character before in one of those hysterically bad AFK Arena ads.

I dislike the white Nick humanizations . I really dislike "generic white"/"generic anime" humanizations in general. They are not only boring and uninspired, but they also barely even resemble the character most of the time.

I wouldn't even know who the humanization is supposed to be is unless someone tells

White people are humans. You are probably white, yourself. Pretending that white people are some separate species can't ever erase that fact.

Huh. I haven't seen the movie but every person I've ever known with the last name "Wilde" has been white, and combined with foxes being associated with the UK and fox hunting, a fox with the last name "Wilde" being white makes perfect sense to me.

Not OP

I could buy Nick as white, but definitely not this particular flavor of twinky yaoi pretty boy white.

I'm curious what you did picture him as? I have no horse in this race but it's interesting!

Not OP, but I think of Nick as a black guy who grew up in the era when black kids were being referred to as “super predators.”

You're getting het up that criminal-conman-turned-cop fox character is ... white? You want him to be a minority? Weird.

Seriously though, of course he's white if he's human. He's a green-eyed redhead called Nick Wilde. What else is he gonna be? Granted, he wouldn't look like that shitty anime prettyboy thing, but come on.

lol i had the same thought. if he had instead been portrayed as a poc, then there would be comments about how offensive and stereotypical it is that the ex-criminal is portrayed as a poc

"het up"?

Colloquial Southern US alternative to "riled up".

Haha, yeah. I thought the predators in Zootopia were an allegory for Western Caucasians.
I don't like the fanart in OP because of the art style, though. It looks like the artist drew an anime guy and said it was Nick. Good art, but I thought it was an OC.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-02 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yup.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
If I were into Zootopia enough I don't think I'd try to depict the characters as human, but if you're going to keep human!Nick ginger, odds are he is going to be a white guy.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-02 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I picture him as Jason Bateman (looking a lot like this - https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000867/mediaviewer/rm1350486528/?ref_=nmmi_mi_210_2). So, white, yeah, but really not like the image in the secret.

Like... I get it, he has a white voice actor, and it makes sense to make him a redhead, which most people associate with whiteness (even though it's entirely possible to be a redhead of any race, it's even rarer in some than others but it's not like there's a group of people that can't have that genetic combination), but like... his story does feel really racialized! 'Because of the parents I was born to/innate things about me from birth, I was treated with distrust, jokes were made about the type of person I am, and I was gradually shut out of more and more avenues to respectability' isn't really a white guy's narrative.

As a fast talking, petty con artist, he should be Latino. That is what ever cop show in the 70s and 80s told me anyway. I'm sure that idea that petty con artists shouldn't be white is in no way a legacy of old racist tv shows.
