Restless Legs/"Jimmy" Legs

(Anonymous) 2026-01-02 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else suffer from restless leg syndrome? Mine are driving me nuts. I'll allllmmmost be asleep and then I kick under the sheets like a damn fool. I feel this strong, uncomfortable need to pedal my feet or stretch.

Besides medicine, what else could calm them down so I can rest?

Thank you!

Have you tried weighted blankets maybe?

It's almost always my right leg. I stretch it out when that happens, even getting out of bed to do deeper stretches. I haven't taken data, but anecdotally I feel like it works?

I've never heard the term Jimmy Legs. TIL!

Honestly the only thing that has helped mine is tensing and releasing my thigh muscles repeatedly basically until I can't anymore. Or getting up and doing squats. I'm not sure if that's just mostly psychological honestly but it does help a bit. All of my "restless leg" feeling is in my thighs though, it sounds like yours might be different?

That and a weighted blanket. Though I feel like my legs have adapted to the weight and I need a heavier one now...

I have bad restless legs. I'm up to 4mg of ropinerole per night and sometimes it doesn't help at all.

Eucalyptus/peppermint oil and heating pad or ice pack can help sometimes.

Omg, it's the worst. Some stretching helps (before bed), or just moving around a bit, and I take magnesium citrate (a gummy supplement) daily to help with this and also horrible fucking leg/foot cramps. So far so good - it's helping a lot!

This. A lack of magnesium is often the reason for leg cramps. I, too, have had very good luck with magnesium citrate supplements.
I’m glad it worked for you, too!

I've been told by my Dr that low iron can also contribute. Sadly my iron then tested fine ha but I figure the info may help.

I am very anemic - have been for years. I've been taking a liquid, vegan iron supplement that doesn't make my innards curl up and die, and actually got to donate blood last month! Thank you for the info, I appreciate it.

I only have it mildly now, but I had it badly for many years when I was having thyroid problems. Get your thyroid checked, if you haven't, and your magnesium, calcium and iron levels. Apart from that, drinking electrolyte solution in the evenings helped me.

Propanolol.
No caffeine, ie decaff tea and coffee, and no pop.
Hot bath a couple of hours before bed.
The sleep specialist says there's a brain operation that can deal with it, but I'm not ready for that yet.
