Everyone always talks about how amazing these movies look. And they are pretty. But the look is just wrong. Nothing looks old enough and it throws me out of the scene a lot of times. I can't buy these places have been around for thousands of years.

The power of the Elves is that they have been keeping their structures looking brand new for thousands of years, in a timeless preserved state.

You don't think the elves would, I don't know, do some renovations or power wash stuff when it starts looking dingy or falling apart?

Right, like, it's not like they're letting stone cities slowly erode for centuries. In a lot of places with thousand-year-old buildings, they actually do renovate them repeatedly - I'm familiar with Japan and their treatment of temples and shrines built as early as 100 BCE. They preserve the traditional techniques and restore them as they were, but with all new materials. I would absolutely believe Elrond has the Last Homely House restored every few centuries, and the flets of Lothlorien are rebuilt as they wear down. I bet even Thingol had bridges and houses rebuilt in Doriath even though it was safe inside the Girdle and Turgon gave Gondolin a nice makeover every century.

But its magic?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-03 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, 'cause those elves sure look thousands of years old and the disparity is just jarring, right?

I sort of get this, but it also is odd because, well... these are living cities. I can get behind it for some of the abandoned areas, but even then, they are abandoned fairly recently in the long history of middle-earth. It's not like places like the cities of Gondor have been sitting pretty for thousands of years with no upkeep, and we barely see much of, say, Arnor. There are plenty of cities on Earth that have existed for millenium and still keep up with the times.
