1. Cuts her own granddaughter out of the family portraits just because she doesn’t have powers, like straight up has her treated like she doesn’t exist as anything other than the family maid all over something Mirabel couldn’t control and treated her like is was her own fault.
2. Has an 8 year old kid so terrified over what should be an exciting day because he’s seen and internalised how the family treats his cousin.
3. Has her son ostracised because he told her a prophecy that he has no power to affect or change.
Hating her is not ‘racist’ she’s a horrible grandmother and I still hate that she was forgiven so easily, like she didn’t abuse the shit out of her whole family. Yeah justified emotional trauma and all that but jfc there’s a point where that isn’t a defence anymore.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-03 12:21 am (UTC)(link)Tbh, I notice there's some abuse apologism in social justice spaces under the guise that "it's a part of some cultures of color" which... Really rubs me wrong. Toxic behavior and generational trauma is not a racial thing, it's a people thing.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-03 02:08 am (UTC)(link)You don't have to like it — in fact, you shouldn't like it, but that's what oppression does to people! It breaks them apart in very real, tangible ways and alienates them from their feelings and loved ones.
Personally, this movie was very close to my experience. It showed me that it was possible to hope for better, and also that being bad at some point doesn't mean you can't strive to be better tomorrow.
