AI article this morning

(Anonymous) 2026-01-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Could someone please help me understand this journalism? Specifically the framing of America's reaction to AI as globally distinct and the hints of condescension in the tone. I'm really trying to figure out what the newspaper's motive is here.

From the NYT newsletter this morning:

"Why Do Americans Hate A.I.?
We look at the uniquely American animosity toward artificial intelligence."

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/02/briefing/why-do-americans-hate-ai.html

Misfire ugh

This is a really weird article. Sorry I can't help with understanding it but it was a sort of fascinating seemingly random take.

Probably some stock-pumping bullshit.

There doesn’t really seem to be any point. The author minimized the impact it’s already had on the workforce and also practically ignored the environmental impacts. The environmental impacts are multi tiered and include resource hoarding as well as pollution. Both of those have a disproportionate effect on rural communities, which is where the data centers are built. Those communities also are more likely to employ the workers whose jobs have already been replaced with AI.
It’s also really weird to minimize the trust aspect and then mention how healthcare workers have raised concerns about it. We’re already seeing necessary healthcare denied by insurance companies using AI to screen authorization requests.

I'm not going to give them the click$ they are looking for, but for me, it's because the negatives currently outweigh the positives.

Probably everyone here has already seen the viral tweet about AI creating art while people are still stuck doing the mundane daily tasks, but it's pretty true. I am not personally seeing any benefits in my life due to AI at this point in time.

I believe it has potential, and at some point it may greatly benefit the average, ordinary person. But in the capitalist hellscape we live in, it's not doing that right now. Instead, ordinary people are losing their jobs because of AI. AI "photos" and "videos" are being used to circulate misinformation. It is going to become increasingly difficult to trust images and videos you see on the internet.

If our society wasn't so focused on enriching the already-rich, AI wouldn't be so scary. I sometimes see proponents of AI say that someday AI will do the labor while people are free to do whatever they want, and that might happen, but I don't see it happening anytime soon. Again, the potential is there, but right now I think we are a long way from AI benefiting us.

And in a more practical, immediate, obvious way, the AI I see casually used is often garbage. Google AI summaries are very frequently completely and totally wrong. My phone and my PC want to shove AI down my throat, but they can't manage the simple tasks I ask of them.

Oh and I forgot the environment impact, and the impact on the costs of RAM, electricity, etc. Let's use a gallon of water so I can make an AI image of a unicorn farting out a rainbow on the moon. Ugh.

da

And that isn't even getting into the fucking AI surveillance by Flock and such, and internet ID verification. (Because AI most certainly never misidentifies, noooooo /s)

It sucks worse in the US because of delightful law enforcement that also most certainly never misidentifies or does anything crazy like threaten others or injure/kill fully cooperating people or any innocent bystanders. (also /s if that wasn't obvious)

This shit needs to be reined in and heavily regulated. It's not sustainable, but it pisses me off to think of the fucking damage it will do (and is already doing) before someone with a conscience and a spine puts a stop to it.

This is genuinely terrifying. AI could maybe do great things for humanity but right now we're using it to sell shit and track people.

They weren't really asking why people are against AI but specifically about the article's point and weird take

+1. I don't think AI is inherently bad. But the way it is used right now isn't benefiting most people. I hate to blame everything on capitalism but seriously. Late stage capitalism ruins everything and that's where we're at right now. Meanwhile we have to see AI slop posted all over social media and even used to sell us items that aren't real.

Not reading the article but I'm not from the US and still hate AI. All my creative and environmentally conscious friends do, no matter their nationality.

What sort of game is this?

Re: AI article this morning

(Anonymous) 2026-01-03 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it isn't.
In some countries, things are so bleak they're betting on the newest crap.
In some countries, they don't even realize how bad it's gotten.
And then there's whoever still manages to take a look at reality.

Reasons why AI sucks:
- internet used to be a place to share info. you know, someone on reddit struggled your struggle 5 years ago and all that. if gemini and chatgpt are answering questions, that's reshaping internet but ALSO making information more easily manipulated. re: ai induced psychosis
- and of course whatever fosters community ie old internet also makes people question hey maybe this isn't fair or whatever so they had to ruin it with astroturf before the final blow of ai fake news and videos
- the viral tweet someone else mentioned about art vs chores and the one about wanting to turn US into the machines and then pretending to freak out about sentient machines like nobody has seen a sci fi show about how bad it can get, no management decision tc
- stealing from well meaning artists who distributed art for free and I believe there is also a beautiful comic about this

it is reshaping the world, as always not for better except for those who control the means of production for as long as they can keep up the dream
that is not to say ai as a technology isn't great ie for surgery precision. but you know, precarization of doctors labor has never been more clear re: pandemic (and I say this as a healthcare person who was an essential worker in 2020)

This thread is so funny to me
