John and Hank are both harmless and not evil but they are deeply annoying and that is the worst quality you can have on the internet.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Can I ask why?

Mostly because I only really discovered the Green brothers when the film adaptation of "The Fault in Our Stars" was coming out. I've watched some of the vlog bros stuff, heard of the various controversies the come and go. And I honestly don't see anything that paints them as grifters or anything too alarming.
But again, I'm only someone who has watched a few YT videos. I haven't read any John Green books or seen any film adaptations of his books.

I think they're probably genuine and seem like nice people but they bother me so much. Honestly it's most likely just to be overexposure at this point. You know those people that kind of bug you but it's nothing, you can't like everyone, but then they are just everywhere and you can't escape seeing their face or hearing their voice to the innocent bugging you turns into "I never want to hear their name again" type of thing?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think that's a lot of it. Any time something gets really overexposed, if you're not a fan of it, it will likely start to annoy you. Examples for me personally include: Wicked, Taylor Swift, Star Wars, Marvel as a whole, A Court of Guns and Roses, all of the stock market bro and crypto bullshit. Anything that takes over pop culture can get annoying.

'A Court of Guns and Roses' would be a great name for a documentary about that band.

Is one of them the author of The Fault in Our Stars? Because if so yeah I don't like that guy either. I can't pin down what it is, but something about him just rubs me the wrong way.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Both of the Green brothers have always struck me as very "men lecturing women about feminism" vibes. I don't think they're predators or anything, but they definitely rubbed me the wrong way in the same way Whedon and Gaimen always have.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeeeesssssss very much same. There's a certain type of guy who just has this aura/vibes/attitude of, like, he knows it all and completely understands and is happy to tell you about how you should feel. Because he knows better since he's a smart privileged man. I dunno, I'm not describing it very well. But there are some men who really come across like they use feminism and social justice/awareness as a way to show that they are safe rather than because its' something they really believe in. Some of them want to ingratiate themselves with women they want to fuck but then if it's a woman they're not interested in (older, ugly, fat, not their type) they'll treat that woman poorly while still acting like the perfect feminist supportive man to other women they're into.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Oh the sleazy male fauxminist who totally gets you and is there for you and supports you and cares about you and all other women, as long as they are fuckable women of course. Yes, yes I've seen this stereotype play out before.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes yes yes yes yes! Men who get more respect than romance writers for writing romantic stories with sad endings are a pet peeve of mine.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I had an entirely neutral opinion on the brothers (had consumed none of their stuff whatsoever, was only aware of their names and general reputation as "not awful guys") up until the drama with the knitting community popped up last year, and now I am also in the camp of "cool performative feminism, still misogyny" and now actively avoiding their content.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
oh no, what was his drama with the knitting community? (A hilarious sentence btw.)

I know nothing about this guy or his work, but "drama in the knitting community" was like a laser bolt aimed straight at need to know center of my brain. What'd he do?

Did you know that women didn't know how sewing worked until SCIENCE????

I honestly really disagree??? Neither Green brother has lectured about feminism imo when again, working on a maternal health centre for YEARS as the central focus of their work.

And when John Green wrote a book about how the Magical Pixie Dream Girl is a bad and misogynistic trope, he actually DIDN'T coast on that and emphasise it as a theme in his marketing the book or, especially, his personal branding half as much as he could have. Like I do think the Whedon and Gaiman comparisons are unfair given how much both those guys branded themselves as feminist while, in Gaiman's case, making some pretty fucking misogynistic work.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel dumb but until just now I didn't realize there were two of them! I only knew about John.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-11 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Hank Green's youtube videos but whenever I see John Green I just feel like, oh it's uncanny valley Hank Green. Bad. No idea why, this is not a principled position.

Me too, OP

Generally, if most people see a person and get really bad vibes, it isn't likely a coincidence. Judging from this image alone, it really looks as if he's plotting my murder. So I'll lean with the crowd and say he's a creep, because why not!

(Anonymous) 2026-01-12 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I know that’s at least partially tongue in cheek, but I’ve been seeing that “no smoke without fire” thing an unpleasant amount lately.

Remember when Tumblr called him creepy?

Yeah. And this is most of my knowledge of him (and his brother?).

Like, it sucks that tumblr got deep into bullying him so hard he left the platform. (and NG was *right* there! Absolute misfire if we've gotta bully a guy.)

But I don't actually enjoy his work or have any interest in him. He's probably fine. If I saw him more than once a month I'd probably dislike him.
