I read Wicked when I was pretty young and immature, and parts of it really messed with me. I loved the Wizard of Oz books when I was really young, so someone who didn't quite realize the content of Wicked gave it to me. It has put me off from ever watching the movies or going to the play, even though I've heard so much about how good it is.

The play (I haven't seen the movies) is so different it's more like an AU of an AU or something. Imo it is much less messed up.

Yeah, the play is literally based on someone else summarizing the book, which the playwright/composer never read.

Ugh, same. I liked the Oz books a lot as a little kid, so young 11 year old me thought I'd like reading Wicked. NOPE.

I have neither read nor seen Wicked in any version, but I did enjoy Dom Noble’s videos about the various adaptations. Seems like some very odd and edgy stuff in the book, a lot of which was smoothed over for the musical and movie.

I’ve never read the book but I saw the play. I went in only knowing it was a twist on TWOZ that made the wicked witch of the west the good guy. I can’t remember anything about it that might come off as upsetting or triggering. It’s a very bland and shallow musical targeted at teens who like catchy songs. It’s definitely worth a watch if you can go, not least because fans of the musical are truly fanatic and it’s honestly awesome to see.

Yeah, I read the book first and there is some unexpectedly fucked up stuff in the book which genuinely seems to be there for shock value. Almost none of that was in the musical.

Eh, you're better off. The musical isn't even based off the books, it's based off a book based off the 1939 movie. If you like the Oz books, you're not gonna find the same in either adaptation.

The Wicked Witch isn't even green in the books, ffs.

The musical is much more lighthearted, it's basically a whole different story. I also read the book when I was way too young and was pretty shocked. I like both but I see them as totally separate things pretty much.
