I'm... kind of over all the nostalgia grabs. Remakes, reboots, remasters, even stuff "inspired" by (aka really just memed to hell and/or beaten over the head of the consumer, who's told its actually awesome and not annoying) old stories/media.

Yes, I know, nothing is truly original. But nothing feels fresh these days. /getoffmylawn

Agreed. I want out of the 1980s.

More than that I wish we weren't getting the stupid parts of the 80s, magnified.

I loved the music and the movies of the 80s. The rest of it, not so much.

+1 They're not sincere.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
And they are almost always inferior to the original in every possible way.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
eh, I wouldn't group remasters in with that. I've finally been able to get copies both digital and physical of albums and movies from the 80s and 90s thanks to anniversary remasters. I've known artists who lost their masters in the Universal fire or had them held hostage by defunct labels who just want a little more money plz. remastering is fine as long as it's not the third "remaster" in 10 years.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. There's a ton of stuff that would straight-up be lost media if it weren't for remasters (albums, movies, video games) because the originals were long out of print and no longer available anywhere but secondhand, and often the prices were prohibitive (or in the case of video games, they were for long-defunct consoles and they didn't always emulate properly. The original Silent Hill 2 was a perfect case of that because while you could emulate it, it was buggy and prone to crashes).

I'm all for making older media accessible to people.

I'm referring more to those "third remaster in 10 years" types. I don't mind a remaster after 20 years.

legit fair. I've been following artists for anywhere from 20-40 years and some of them really need to stop remastering, it's not going to be any clearer than it was the last time.

honestly? good call and good distinction.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
IMO that really, really depends. I can think of no small number of things that really NEED reboots or remakes for various reasons, chief among them things like:

1) The original version was low-budget and/or low-quality because it didn't gain any sort of significant popularity until after it was released
2) It was an anime adaptation of a manga that was still being serialized, so they either had to asspull an ending for the anime because the manga itself wasn't done yet or they just ended it partway through and never even animated a large portion of it
3) The original was dated in ways that are cringey rather than charming
4) It's something that would really benefit from current special effects technology

For things like that, I see a reboot or a remake as being an attempt to be closer to the original vision for whatever it was rather than as a cash grab.

I was watching an ad for The 'Burbs (2026) like, this can't be a remake of the Tom Hanks movie, can it? It can. It is. I like Keke Palmer, but what? It is kind of interesting that they made it the wife who suspects something is up with the neighbor rather than the husband (though he's maybe involved somehow, maybe?).

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
wait WHA? they rebooted WHAT??

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
A remake or reinterpretation or whatever should at least have HEART. If the creators put passion in it, that will make it interesting. I had problems with GDT's Frankenstein for a few nitpicks, but one thing it didn't lack was earnestness. So much of all the big movies and shows today are just soulless cash-grabs. I don't care if it's Gnomeo and Juliet 2 or whatever, as long as there is genuine love put into it!

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
It's pretty much always just a cash grab because it's a low effort way to get people to spend money because they loved the original. I'm also sick of it.

Honestly "nothing is truly original" isn't even a good excuse for blatant cash grabs.
A story that's like, inspired by XYZ landmark media (fill in the blank) but is still the creator's vision would be more interesting to me than a remake or another adaption of XYZ.

Sorry, OP. There are certain universes where I'm just always happy to be in them. I will happily take spin-offs and sequels of my favorites.
