What are some of your favorite quotes in media, the ones that have stuck with you?

Inspired by watching Two Towers today and hearing my favorite quote:

Yup. It is one of the things they took straight from the books, and they used that quote because it is powerful and works.

Mild spoilers for House of Leaves (this happens 70 pages into the book).

""At which point, the study door suddenly swings open and Daisy, wearing a red and gold dress, barges in and begins tugging on her father's sleeve.

"Come play with me, Daddy." Navidson lifts his daughter onto his lap. "Okay. What do you want to play?" "I don't know," she shrugs. "Always." "What's always?' But before she can answer, he starts tickling her around the neck and Daisy dissolves into bursts of delight.

Despite the tremendous amount of material generated by Exploration A, no one has ever commented on the game Daisy wants to play with her father, perhaps because everyone assumes it is either a request "to play always" or just a childish neologism. Then again "always" slightly mispronounces "hallways." It also echoes it.""

I know HP is frowned upon

but I just really really love the quote "it does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live."

I was deeply in fandom and not really "living" in the real world when I read that quote and it had such a deep impact on me. It literally changed my life. I have such a better balance of fandom/life now and when I find myself maladaptive daydreaming or getting too much into fandom I remember that quote and it will set me right again.

That quote helped me through end of 2024 and all of 2025.

It helped me through 2025 and will help me through 2026. A big reason I really needed to watch LOTR again.

DA
I know you're a big LOTR fan but I'm curious if you read the books and then (also) loved the movies, or if you were a movie first fan?

So, interestingly, I did read the books as a kid, but I only liked them a bit while I loved the movies. But then as an adult I read the Silmarillion and fell in love with the world. And reread the books and fell in love with them. The movies have issues for sure, and I see more and more all the time. But I'm still always happy to be in Middle Earth, even a somewhat distorted version. And while the movies do have issues, one thing they capture well is Tolkien's sense of hope. And that's what I really need right now/

I did recently reread the books as well.

That is really lovely, thanks for answering my curiosity.

Also, I should add that one of my very earliest memories is my dad reading the Hobbit to me. So Middle Earth has been part of my life since I was very young.

I've got quite a few from Lois McMaster Bujold, mostly from her Vorkosigan saga series:

"Adulthood isn't an award they'll give you for being a good child. You can waste... years, trying to get someone to give that respect to you, as though it were a sort of promotion or raise in pay. If only you do enough, if only you are good enough. No. You have to just...take it. Give it to yourself, I suppose. Say, I'm sorry you feel like that, and walk away. But that's hard.โ€

โ€œReputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself.โ€

โ€œGuard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards.โ€

โ€œWhen you choose an action, you choose the consequences of that action. When you desire a consequence you had damned well better take the action that would create it.โ€

See how elastic our prejudices grow when once love comes to bend them.

Talk not to me of blasphemy, man; I'd strike the sun if it insulted me.

Think not, is my eleventh commandment; and sleep when you can, is my twelfth.

To enjoy bodily warmth, some small part of you must be cold, for there is no quality in this world that is not what it is merely by contrast. Nothing exists in itself. If you flatter yourself that you are all over comfortable, and have been so a long time, then you cannot be said to be comfortable any more. For this reason a sleeping apartment should never be furnished with a fire, which is one of the luxurious discomforts of the rich. For the height of this sort of deliciousness is to have nothing but the blanket between you and your snugness and the cold of the outer air. Then there you lie like the one warm spark in the heart of an arctic crystal.

-All are from Moby-Dick which fucking rules I have had such a blast reading it.

Not a quote, exactly, but the way dragons are metaphors for humans in 'Guards! Guards!'. How in legends, dragons are mighty intelligent beasts, but in (Discworld) reality swamp dragons are kind of pathetic and just incidentally dangerous, and even then mostly to themselves. But even though there is a good argument to be made to let nature run its course and let this ridiculous species self-destruct, they are living beings and maybe deserve the help and compassion of people like Lady Sybil Ramkin. She shovels dragon shit and has all her hair burnt off to care for these stupid things, even though she really doesn't have to that, and is considered a bit of a nutter for it. But she does it anyway because she decided she cares.

That view of humanity really helped and helps me with societal and political happenings. Like, 'you people are stupid and making your own lives harder but that's part of our nature and you deserve compassion anyway,' and 'I know you think me a fool but I will shovel this shit, put on my wig and sweep gracefully past you at the society function because while I do care about swamp dragons, I do not care about your opinion.`
