I hope GRRM never finishes Winds of Winter. It is clear he has run out of story in his head to tell. I've seen what happens when an author has clearly ran out of story to tell with their characters, but feels they have to keep pumping out books anyway by rote (looking at you, Briam Lumley and the Necroscope stuff after Vampire World, looking at you) and it ain't great. George, quit while you are behind.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I pretty much gave up on GRRM a decade ago. If I get an itch, it's fanfic for me. And I don't care how he feels about it. As far as I'm concerned, it's his own damn fault. (I realize fanfic would exist anyway, I'm just saying he doesn't get to bitch about it.)

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he's run out of story, he has plenty of story. Too much story, wandering all over the place. But the last book clearly showed he has no ability to corral it into a readable format, and no interest in doing so.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-17 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly my own personal theory is that the way the show ended is how the books end, and because it was so massively hated he can't find a way to finish it all without massive rewrites that he just can't do at this point without needing to change too much.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if he finishes the series, but at this point, I won't get my hopes up and I'm resigned to it being unfinished forever.

I agree and disagree

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
He has so much story left to tell! Faegon's invasion, fight in Mareen, White Walkers, on and on.

But he doesn't want to tell it. I don't care if he's tired or had the wind taken out of his sails by the show or if he's lost interest.

The author is done, not the story.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
At this point, those books will never be finished and it'll be like Kentaro Miura (passed before he could finish Berserk), Yoshihiro Togashi (stopped Hunter x Hunter due to serious health problems), Charles Dickens (passed before he could finish The Mystery of Edwin Drood), and Kinsey Milhone (passed before she could complete the last alphabet murder mystery book).

I just feel that he's done at this point and also, he's 77, as of 2026.

i think he has more story to tell, but he's a lazy bitch, and having people ABSOLUTELY hate bran on the iron throne when the show ended (and considering his condition for d&d to do the show was them telling him who was going to end on the throne and if they were right they could do it, ONE CAN ASSUME bran on the throne was literally the real ending) hurt his feelings and so now he doesn't want to end it and it's not even trying

He gave up writing when the tv deal started coming through iirc. The fact that he will never finish it gets funnier every year. He just lost steam on it once he had the tv money. I don't really blame him and I think Game of Thrones is overrated to hell and back so I'm not sorry it's gone forever.

I just wonder who they will hire to finish once he passes, Brandon Sanderson has said that he doesn't want to do it and doesn't consider himself a good fit. Maybe Guy Gavriel Kay?

Hasn't he like not written anything for over a decade now? I really don't think you have to worry about him starting anything now.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be amazing to see him publish more books (to complete it would be mubd blowing), but I get the feeling he won't complete the series.

It's really interesting. To work so hard on something, and to just...know you won't complete it.
Reading this secret, I was reminded if Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales. He even wrote in his private journals of knowing that as he writes his stories he won't be able to complete it.

GRRM is and will remain a legend whether or not he completes ASOIAF. It's gotta be bittersweet. Sad knowing you won't complete this story that has taken so much of your life to write. But what a flex to have a successful career, and to have people still wanting to keep reading your books knowing the ending will not come from the original source.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I have a rather unpopular take about this (funnily, I was just discussing this with a friend). I'm a writer too, and if I were GRRM and I gave the general outline of my books to the Got showrunners (even if some things have changed, some things like Jon's parentage or Danny's arc obviously make sense with the books) and they executed it so poorly, I feel like I would have lost steam too. It's not like this happens very often with this level of success or derision for the final product.

And also, I do think that he has a story to tell, but the sheer amount of plot threads he would have to wrap up to do so is off the rocker. You can't finish that story in two books and, although somf of it "is his own fault" as someone itt said and it's certainly his job, I'm a little sad that people speak so spitefully and can be so entitled about him.

Tell me you're not a writer without telling me you aren't a writer.

I firmly believe that Star Trek was made to enshrine the concept of White Man's Burden in the mind of America. And it worked.

I like seeing unquestioned sibling bed-sharing in media, especially with older kids and adults. And no, it's not a kink thing because it's not kinky. It's normal and I want to see it represented as such.

Some of us grew up poor and didn't have the space or money for two beds. And some of us had siblings who literally couldn't sleep without someone nearby because humans are primates and primates like sleeping in a pile.

If I could delete any Star Trek episode, from any Star Trek Franchise, from existence forever... It'd be DS9's In the Pale Moonlight. Not because I don't like, I love it, but I'm sick of the way so much of the fanbase fellates it.

Fans Ruin Everything.

And I can live with that

For as long as I've been watching TV, I have never liked episodes of shows involving a one-time-only character being a bully to one of the main characters.

I don't find either of the leads in Heated Rivalry attractive and that's fine since I feel like that as a bisexual woman, I'm not the target audience. I still enjoy it.
