Star Trek and Star Wars fans share one key aspect, both franchise’s modern fanbase seem to actively hate the original material that the franchises were born from.

I’ve had the opposite experience. Fans of the original material actively hate the new material and the new fans.

I think you misunderstand. Possibly purposely.

DA but I actually had the same reading and reaction as the anon you replied to. Could explain the secret for me? because I am clearly misunderstanding it.

Here's the text of the secret:

Star Trek and Star Wars fans share one key aspect, both franchise’s modern fanbase seem to actively hate the original material that the franchises were born from.

As you can see, it says that modern fanbases hate the original material. There is no other way to interpret that sentence without making assumptions about what OP meant to say rather than what they actually did.

This is not at all what this secret is getting at. Old fans (typically and rightfully) criticize the new material because a bunch of people who have no love for or often even knowledge about the old material created something entirely different and often downright disrespectful to the old material and then slapped the name on it.

And thus that disrespect and lack of care shows a greater amount of hate towards the material than any criticism of the new material does.

Sorry, I'm genuinely having a hard time understanding this secret. So basically it's saying if you like the newer movies/shows you hate the original material? And that the newer stuff isn't real Trek/Wars and just made by people looking to make a buck?

Re: Transcript by OP

But that's not what the secret says. The secret says that the modern fanbase hates the old material. It says nothing about older fans criticizing the new material, nor does it say that modern writers/show runners/directors/etc hate the new material.

You're assuming that OP meant to say something different from what's in the text.

+1, same yeah. I've seen modern material fans that don't find the OGs to their taste, but not as many that hate the old material as I've seen old fans that hate the new stuff.

Well, apparently we're all stupid, and should know that what OP meant to say was some variation of, "older fans dislike the new material and new fans for disrespecting the old material" or "the creators of the new material actively hate the old material."

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd very much like to see some of the old campy fun times from both shows, but it is still all grimdark these days. Especially in Star Wars, why so serious?

(Anonymous) 2026-01-18 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
?.. I don't watch Star Wars, but I got the opposite feeling when it comes to Star Trek. 2009 really clogged up TOS's tags, and they refuse to leave the original characters alone in most of the more recent shows too. Not sure why that'd make modern fans hate the original, ignorant to it maybe, but not hateful.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-19 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Huh? Basically the only thing Star Wars fans DO agree on, old and new, is that the OT is the best of the three.

What? I've rarely ever seen a Star Wars fan that says they hate the OT. Most often it is people wanting everything to mirror the OT. I really haven't seen new fans hating the OT.
