Following Netflix's clever ploy to maintain subscribers by releasing Stranger Things in different months so that people would be forced to pay for multiple months instead of binging the show and canceling their subscription, all I can think is that streaming services will start slowly releasing shows week by week to maintain streaming subscriptions instead of dropping entire seasons at once and look, we're going to be right back to the cable TV model again...

Not caring about spoilers really helps with that. xD

I mean, I wouldn't complain if we went back to weekly episodes.

I don't have any subscriptions, but just generally speaking I miss the weekly episode structure.

I don't miss it. I love binging, and I'm also keen to wait until a show's season is over before I watch it.

Same. My friends and I do a weekly movie/TV show night and our one biggest rule is that we don't watch anything until the season is finished.

I honestly liked it too. Releasing it all at once is fine, but I kind of miss the one episode a week thing, too.

Same! I hate bingeing because one of the aspects I enjoy about watching a show is the social side of it. I know many think that’s a fandom thing but when shows aired weekly it was so common for people who have never even heard of fandom to talk about shows and even discuss theories, etc.. But now everyone watches an entire show in one or two days moves on within a week at most. The shows typically lack the depth that spurred those conversations but not always and it’s especially sad when a show has some great stuff to talk about but really all people remember are the last few scenes.

Hey, let's keep going. Maybe we'll get that cable that doesn't have advertisements.

Ha!

I'm okay with that. It's nice to have people be able to talk about the episodes in the week between and theorise and stuff. It's been lovely in the Fallout fandom at the moment for that exact reason.

Season 1 was supposed to be week-to-week and they dropped it at once. Season 2... they actually did week-to-week. I expect that was partly to stop it running into Stranger Things, but it's worked really nicely for fan building theories and getting people talking.

I don't even have netflix, but I would prefer that so much more than the current trend of one day binging.

Amazon and HBO do that for a lot of their show, no? I think the model of dumping the entirety of a season in one day is basically over. Netflix is still the biggest proponent of this model, but like you say I think they're going to revert back to a weekly schedule for a lot of their catalogue and I say GOOD. Binge culture is not good for fandom.
OH and on Netflix their original anime do have a weekly release!

You don't have to live like this. Come, sail the high seas.

Wow, I'm really surprised by the pushback here because no matter how you like your episodes spaced, the consumer is on a net loss trajectory unless they happen to subscribe to THE one big service with all THE viral shows.

Dumping a season all at once has its drawbacks. For viewing, fandom, and profit margins.

Intentionally spacing episodes to maximize monthly revenue is OK I guess if it's one viral show on one streaming service and not stretched longer than 3 months.

Doing either of the above for a fee AND incorporating advertising is unforgivable IMO.

Weekly episodes are great, I see no downside. If there's something on a service I don't have, I don't do a trial I just pirate it.
