I don't know whether I think it's funny or sad that after everything JK Rowling has done, there are still people who list the fact that she named an Asian character "Cho Chang" as one of her most deadly sins.

if JKR were more well liked, we'd all agree that she didn't put a lot of thought into the name, but that we could just decide the character has part Chinese and part Korean or Japanese heritage and move on.

I mean... if JKR hadn't shown herself to be a bigot, then yeah, people would be more understanding of what looks like casual racism at best, combined with sloppy writing and no research, by an author who delighted in being lauded as the progressive champion by fandom in the early days. It feels a little disingenuous to say it's about popularity. It is... but the reason why Rowling isn't as popular as she once was is due to her behavior and the awful things she says.

People were side-eying Cho Chang from the get-go. Harry Potter readers just ignored them because Joanne was too popular to get brought down by a sloppily named Asian character. Just like some people were ignored *cough* me *cough* when they said JKR was always a bad writer.

Hey, we're in a small club, but I, too, always thought Rowling was mediocre at best.

The girl lives in the UK, having mixed heritage isn't unrealistic.

They're both surnames.

That isn't how any of that works.

It is when you only have distant relatives and name your kid after your great great grandmother.

Cho is a given name in Korean and Japanese. It isn't common, but neither is Hermione, or Pansy, or Xenophilius. Google female Korean celebrities named Cho. I've met a Japanese girl named Cho(u).

Two. Surnames.

C'mon now.

Nayrt

Two surnames that are put first in both Korean and Chinese, in which UK does the opposite. Cho is from the UK, it's really not as bad as you're trying to imply.
I'm not defending JK, just that naming conventions do work this way sometimes. OP is right that this isn't a big deal in the scheme of things. It's weird to fixate on this one point when it's something that can and does happen.
