I mean... if JKR hadn't shown herself to be a bigot, then yeah, people would be more understanding of what looks like casual racism at best, combined with sloppy writing and no research, by an author who delighted in being lauded as the progressive champion by fandom in the early days. It feels a little disingenuous to say it's about popularity. It is... but the reason why Rowling isn't as popular as she once was is due to her behavior and the awful things she says.
