I liked it just fine but I do think there were things here and there that could have been done better, unfortunately it's gained an absolutely insufferable fanbase that cannot take anything other than gushing praise towards this show and will consider you to be a terrible person for thinking that some bits of the story were weak, or cannot handle it if you don't like the leads as people(they were both annoying as fuck! I am not 'unable to understand the subtleties' I just found them irritating).

Do you mean "leads" as in the main characters or the actors? I figured the latter at first, but then I'm not sure what sort of subtleties someone is supposed to understand about real-life people.

What annoys me the most is when fans praise a show for "choices" that do not really deserve that kind of praise. "That montage was perfect" It was a normal montage. "The way he lifted his pinky ties in to his childhood dog's death" shut up. "OMG the curtains are blue!!!" shut uppppp.
I enjoy over-analyzing a show I love as much as the next guy but come on.

Oh, this reminds me of seeing a comment flailing over the pool scene where Ilya asks Shane to buy the kids he raced their promised ice creams since Ilya didn't have his wallet on him. The comment tied it back to how Ilya has to financially support his family in Russia and gushes how Shane is the only one Ilya feels comfortable enough to ask for help when it comes to money. Which is just such a reach in and of itself but then someone posted the scene from the book which lead to more gushing in the comments and apparently everyone just overlooked that the excerpt invalidates the whole hypothesis - because the book scene ends with Ilya turning right around and asking another player for the ten bucks he needs.

I love the show myself and I do think that a lot of things are intentional - but not everything is and that's okay.

Exactly!
I love the show as well and of course I have some takes of my own, but those are valid. ;-) My excellent observations vs their crazed fangirling etc.

Exactly! xD

We get each other, anon. <3

OP

THANK YOU for agreeing omg. Every bit of discourse I see about the show seems to have an overly positive account on it/extremely defensive fans that I was starting to wonder if we were watching the same show.

Im glad people enjoy it but I found it pretty generic for the hockey rpf/sports rpf genre. It's a story that's been done many times before, and this particular version would be on the more mediocre side if I were to compare writing quality.
