What does Charlie mean?

Personally, I find it a little worrying that people are using the not my country not my problem excuse rather than the obvious different contexts mean different things answer. It reminds me of an author who translated their work into english and used the word Gypsy to describe a character, (a nameless wild traveling fortune teller) and when told it was considered a slur and offered reasonable other options they just doubled down and said that everyone in their country uses that word to describe people like that and it isn't a slur and they know that because they're european, or something.

I've heard that A/B/O is a slur as well before, but it's not even word, and very clearly not even a personal descriptor even when used. It doesn't take away from the feelings of people who are hurt when hearing that word, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the slur either, and rather obviously at that. Telling people to not use an acronym at all because it sorta resembles something that might be offensive to a group of people is dumb though. Context and comprehension is what matters.

It's from the Vietnam war - Viet Cong getting shortened to VC, which becomes Victor Charlie in the NATO alphabet, which then becomes Charlie.
