Obsessiveness amnd enthusiasm do not equal Fandom.

But I'm happy you enjoy your fancy cup.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
What, do people have to write smutty fics about Stanley cups for it to count?

('Cause seriously, obsessiveness and enthusiasm is fandom's breath and bread.)

For me, being in a fandom is about three things:
1. Intent – deliberately setting out to share your experiences with other fans; being part of a fan collective
2. Attachment – forming some emotional connection to that something beyond just the initial enjoyment of consuming it
3. Action – engaging with that something outside the initial watching/listening/reading/playing/buying of that something in any way

And I feel like they are meeting all three of those things if they are dressing them the fuck up and sharing that with others. Maybe not your typical fandom, but not the weirdest out there.

Stanley Girlies are why I will never own a Stanley, same as Jeep People are why I’ll never own a Jeep. Oops, I mean J🐾p People. Or J☕️☕️p People. And the ones who rock the Jeep Flag Butthole.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously they don't go by Jeeple?

I don't think I'm a "Stanley girlie" but man, I do love my mug and it keeps my water cold all night for wakeup sips.

Mine is a boring minimalist white one, though.

But I do like handbag charms! So I'm not anti-embellishment in general.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's boring of you. You should avoid Jeeps because they're expensive as heck to keep on the road.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not into them myself, but if I was to get one, I probably would do the same. Considering their price, I may as well have fun and show some personality beyond "I have a bland pricey cup" tbh.

Something looking childish is never going to be a deterrent outside of a formal work environment for me. Acting like an adult is subjective and a lot of what I like about it is that I can do whatever I want that I couldn't do as a kid.

Sometimes the oddest things turn up decorative. I was looking at what were basically surgical scissors from a company called Castroviejo at a hobby site that specializes in miniatures and tools for same. They happened to be out of them at the time, so I looked to see who else had them and found a surgical site that happened to have a better price... and sold them in anodized rainbow color!

So yeah, I bought the rainbow scissors, why not? (Though I do wonder why actual surgeons might want that instead of plain stainless steel...)

I think there are some things that are objectively "adult" and objectively "childish," and I think the notion that we all just get to decide what being an adult means is ultimately a way to avoid a lot of things we don't want to face.

I care nothing for fancy cups or fancy cup fandoms, but who cares if they're having fun? It's their money and it doesn't sound like anyone is being hurt.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I see these cups in stores, and they're always weird neon or pastel colors, and the general design makes me think of Tupperware sippy-cups for kids.

That is to say, the "canon" here skews cutesy and infantile. So no surprise the "fanon" response is an exaggerated version of that.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
That looks cumbersome as fuck. I understand the bracelets but that braided fabric calm down! It's a beverage container.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
The braided fabric is a carrying handle so it actually makes more sense than the bracelets tbh.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
What drives me crazy is how many people display their collection of tumblers and then post memes about how bad and exploitative capitalism is.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
Don't those bracelets hit you in the face when you drink?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
My assumption would be that anyone who collects this many of the same object and decorates them this ridiculously never actually drinks from them.

I assume that you use a straw with them to prevent that.

Do you ever ship your cups romantically together?

I can't with the culture that's sprung up around Stanley cups but I am glad people are out there hydrating. The one thing I *do* like about the Stanley cup fandom (aside from people drinking water) is how much embellishing and personalizing goes on!

(Anonymous) 2026-02-10 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Look, everyone has their own needs and wants in terms of a drinking/portable cup. Stanleys aren't for me, but I find the charms and accessories cute XD

I really like maximalism so definitely more appealing to me than most others I think

My knock-off Stanley (work provided!) and water bottle are covered in stickers.

On the one hand - I like stickers and I don't like dangley bracelets.
On the other hand - I can't take my stickers off for the dishwasher but I bet all that stuff comes off for cleaning.

All that to say - I win at childishness <3
