I'm kind of a BNF in a small fandom because I designed (and wrote) a humanized AU version of a non-human character that got popular online. It's gotten to the point where I'm receiving *fanart* of the blorbo! Which is great!

But.

Now a couple of these artists are sending me drawings of my guy wearing corsets, maid outfits, etc, clearly fetishistic art with blushing and everything.

Secret: it's not *my* fetish. Trust me, I'm a freak pervert but I'm completely indifferent to this shtick. Jesus christ why do people assume everybody loves drag? I won't pretend to love it because it would drive me nuts and backfire on me. Yet I hesitate to tell the truth because I don't want to rain on their parade, either.

I'm not thrilled by this trajectory where other people's fetishes will end up overriding the character I designed. It's become such an annoying and inescapable situation and I have no idea how to handle it.

Hmm... if you're more indifferent than anything, I'd say leave it be, just say thanks or say nothing and move on. If it's actively bothering you, maybe politely say that you have a bit of a feminization squick and don't mind them having their fun, but don't need to have it messaged to you? I personally wouldn't take offense to that, sometimes my fandom friends and I don't share kinks and have to let each other know we don't want to see something. I can't say if that would cause drama in your fandom but hopefully not.

agreed, but only OP knows the climate of their fandom. in some spaces, BNFs are damned if you do, damned if you don't, while in others people are capable of understanding boundaries and squicks and communicate like adults so that everyone is cool.

it might also be worth it for OP to consider whether being treated as a BNF is worth the headache - I get it, it's a high when we all need something nice, but not dealing with it can very quickly sour your interest in the fandom at all and leave you festering in resentment. if establishing boundaries is enough to cause drama, I say let it.

Sometimes when you're a BNF, you have to take the high road (like we want original creators to do) and ignore what fans do with your OCs or whatever. I just let people enjoy things.

SA

To add: that doesn't mean you have to repost and share their work, either~!

Oof, that's rough.
I think your best bet is to just give casual thanks for the art you don't like, while pointing out a thing or two about art you do like, just to try and give a subtle hint at what you prefer.
It probably won't work, as people are gifting you this type of art to probably either 1up themselves/get extra special attention from you. But depending on how much art/response you get in a given day, I don't think it would hurt too much if maybe you missed thanking a person on the occasion they gifted you something you especially didn't like either?

I mean, I can sketch for the most part, but when I gift it, I try to make it as close to the character as I can imagine. (which isn't much given I generally can only manage a basic headshot) I get peoples instincts to throw their own fetishes into the mix, but I also think that people will jump on those fetishes if they think they're popular enough as well?
idk, sorry you're in this position OP. Fame always tends to be double edged unfortunately.
