Quilting! I’m super excited to have everything else done that needs to be done and I can spend two whole days just cutting and piecing. I’m finishing up a jelly roll quilt and then I’m breaking out of my comfort zone and doing a bear’s paw quilt.

Oooh! That type of quilt looks gorgeous! What kind of machine do you use?

Isn’t it cool?! I was taken immediately the first time I ever saw one but it’s very intimidating because it’s basically four blocks with sashing and a stone mixed in. I have only worked with jelly rolls, charm squares, and half square triangles so far and this makes me nervous but excited.

I have an Elna with a 12” throat. I really should have gone with a Babylock Jazz II (11” throat, still plenty of room for machine quilting up to a queen size quilt). But I’ve been taking the time lately to learn more about what my machine can do and I’ve been using the decorative stitches on my bindings which is a wonderful touch.

Do you just use a regular sewing machine for this? I would like to do kantha and other quilts but don't know how to start.

Yes, just a regular sewing machine. I did upgrade last year to one with a much wider throat (the space between the needle and the main body of the machine) but you don’t need a big machine to piece (sew your blocks together). A standard sized machine is fine for quilting even pretty big quilts like up to double size. You just have to be creative with rolling and clamping the spots you aren’t working on.

My first one that I did just to test if I could inside my regular machine was a panel quilt. I used the Riley Blake National Parks panel (it’s like $16 on Amazon), a twin size cotton quilt batting (Quilter’s Dream, request loft, which is the thinnest of that line but more importantly for me it was the cheapest), and I used the flat sheet of a thrifted sheet set for the backing. I just put the layers together and then sewed around each rectangle in the panel. It turned out amazing! It’s my favorite blanket in the house although I do wish now I had used the next thickest batting. I made a second one for my MIL and used a double layer of Quilter’s Dream Select and backed it with a flannel sheet. She lives in a much colder climate and says it’s the only blanket she needs at night.

Thank you! I prefer thin quilts and wall-hanging types of textiles anyway; I don't think I'd be making king size ones or anything versus maybe a throw for my couch. This is helpful. :)
