I dunno what the author's politics are, but Project Hail Mary is a great lighthearted sf novel. The film's due out next month and it looks fantastic.

I looked him up. He says he’s “fiscally conservative and socially liberal.” So one of these guys: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/im-socially-liberal-and-fiscally-conservative-which-is-totally-not-meaningless

Honestly, I find them more tolerable than the Republicans.
