I like lighthearted sci-fi adventure novels, but it feels like the only people still writing them are conservative bigots with a military fetish.

I mean, not to doubt you because I'm not into that genre but "conservative bigots" don't really sound like the people who write lighthearted... anything. I always assumed they're more the types to go for the tryhard grimdark stuff.

To give the obvious example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Ringo

I dunno what the author's politics are, but Project Hail Mary is a great lighthearted sf novel. The film's due out next month and it looks fantastic.

I looked him up. He says he’s “fiscally conservative and socially liberal.” So one of these guys: https://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/im-socially-liberal-and-fiscally-conservative-which-is-totally-not-meaningless

Honestly, I find them more tolerable than the Republicans.

In the comment secret thread, someone mentioned they'd like to see more fun, light-hearted adventure in both sci-fi and fantasy, less grimdark world's-gonna-end stakes. I agree wholeheartedly.

Definitely agree. There has been soke "cozy" books in the genres but that is often too much the other way for me. I just was fun adventure scifi and fantasy. No grimdark. No assholes as heroes. But also need at least some conflict.

I don't mind the low stakes stuff, but there's a lot of room between "the world is ending in blood and sacrifice if we don't defeat the Lord of Darkness" and "retired orc mercenary deals with city bureaucracy and small business owner problems as she opens a coffee shop". Mid-stakes? That'd be good.

I mean, I've been rereading the Murderbot Diaries this month, and those at least beg to differ.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-23 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
yesssssssss, came here to mention murderbot

(Anonymous) 2026-02-23 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
There's no military fetish, but I'm not sure that I'd call the Murderbot Diaries "lighthearted."

(Anonymous) 2026-02-23 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure how to phrase this the right way, but this kind of brings up the question of How the Messaging is Going, right? If it's easier to get lighthearted and positive media from the conservative side of the spectrum, then that spells trouble for the liberal side of the political spectrum.

I think the problem is that too many writers think “adventure” has to mean “killing loads of dudes.” Lighthearted mass slaughter is more of a conservative thing. (Leftists are more into angrily killing loads of dudes, e.g. angrily killing Nazis.)
