Where do you go for answers?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-23 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like google and general search engines are such trash now. Either it is AI answers or Sponsored answers, neither of which I trust and rarely what I am looking for. Sadly I often find myself on reddit looking for answers to questions these days. Usually there are at least some people with solid links to follow.

I used to use Startpage (uses Google results) and DuckDuckGo but even they are being overrun with AI shit. Brave as well.

Mojeek doesn't have that problem but its search results aren't always the most up to date either, which is still an issue.

I'd love to know of a happy medium, myself.

Depends on the question, but I still use Google and just vet the sources more carefully.

Depends on the question.

For taxes, irs.gov, since they make the laws, still it can be hard if you don't know exactly what you're looking for.

Minor medical stuff, generally Mayo Clinic.

General info about things (celebs, movies, tv shows, geography, demographics, etc.), Wikipedia

Very specific fandom data, I try to find a wiki for that fandom.

Historical figures, Encyclopedia Brittanica

Distances, Google maps

Some old fandom kerfuffle or something, fanlore.org

Pictures and roles for actors, IMDb

Science, math, research studies, I often look on .edu sites

This is such a nice list, I chuckled at the "old fandom kerfuffle or something"

You can just scroll down a little on the Google results page and ignore the AI and sponsored results.

If your results aren’t relevant, try tweaking your query. I’ve found that typing my question just as I would ask a person usually gives me the best results.

Put a space and then -AI at the end of your search queries in Google. It doesn't get rid of the sponsored results, unfortunately, but at least the AI crap goes away.
