Idk what specifically OP is talking a out, but the wife/family set up a GoFundMe the day after Van der Beek died when they owned a multibillion dollar ranch (which they bought recently knowing he didn't have much time) and own a million(?) dollar property in CA that the rent out. So they fully have money, the could sell either or both properties, they just don't want to change their lifestyle and think they don't have to.

Also I think the wife is a homeopathic grifter type? Not clear on those deets though.

They do not own a multibillion dollar ranch LOL They rent a farm and had been renting it for years before his diagnosis. And if your spouse just died the last thing you’d want to do is pack up your six kids and move. I’m actually in agreement in general about GFMs for celebs but honestly it’s wild watching people invent bullshit to justify their ick. Dude was selling shit off left and right to pay for treatment because he was American and didn’t qualify for insurance.

"James Van Der Beek and his family officially purchased the Texas ranch they had been renting in 2020, making it their permanent home. The property, located in Spicewood near Austin, was bought for $4.76 million on January 9, 2026, just over a month before his death on February 11, 2026."

They could sell it and downsize but *shrug* guess it's easier to ask random people to pay your bills than to take responsibility and make changes in your life.

What is this quote from? Every source after his death says they’re renting.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-26 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Not where the quote is from but I just did a basic search and this was the top answer: https://people.com/james-van-der-beek-secured-down-payment-for-familys-texas-ranch-before-death-11906987

Thanks! I hadn’t seen anything about that. TBH I don’t think it much changes my view of his case. In theory they could downsize but in reality all she can do is take on more debt while overcrowding the kids. This way she has something that she can sell when they’re grown and still secure a normal modest home for herself without taking on debt.

Thanks! I hadn’t heard anything about it, looks like the news just came out.

gonna need a citation because uh. he may not have been a billionare but he certainly "qualified" for insurance. being American doesn't mean we don't have insurance, and celebrities in general are above an income level where they get the best insurance anyway.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-26 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This is one of literally hundreds of articles that came out in the first few days after his death. Short answer: he did not have insurance in 2024 and it’s unlikely he managed to get it in 2025. In November of 2025 he was still uninsured per statements he made that month while auctioning off memorabilia. Because of his cancer he was not able to afford any health insurance that would cover his treatments.

This article also explains the lack of residuals since that is a big part of why he didn’t have the money people think he should have.

I thought you mostly got insurance through your workplace (or through your union if you're an actor) and that only kicks in if you work a certain amount every year. He's never been a big star.

It says their friends set it up, not the wife.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-26 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh okay. I had read the friends set up a thing to help them put the downpayment on the house but the wife announced the gofundme.

Aw, you don't have the Beek Deets? I hope someone comes in with the Beek Deets.
