Meanwhile, I didn't even realise he's Asian until I was halfway through the show. I thought he was just a bit odd-looking, but people can have monolids, and maybe it's some sort of condition I don't know and that's what his mother was talking about. No, I didn't realise she's Asian either. I guess I'm not hateful, but just as ignorant as the racist haters.

I am giving OP grace and assuming they didn't understand the negative rascist connotations odd looking and having "a condition" have. I think there is not really an easy way to explain when/how you mistake someone's race.

I'm hesitantly giving the benefit of the doubt... if someone had said "this actor is a bit odd looking for an asian person" and it turns out that actor is half white, I wouldn't find that maliciously racist, either. I also assumed the condition part was specifically about monolidded eyes, which most 'white' people don't have, not his overall appearance or anything

No, I read it like that too. Not the most kind way to say it, for sure, but OP admits their ignorance and I've come across plenty of people who find mixed-race faces "unusual" simply because of their less common combinations of features.

I'm enjoying the show and am not in the fandom, but people are being racist against this actor? I guess I shouldn't be surprised but I somehow am. He doesn't look "odd" at all; I think he's considered objectively pretty handsome.

I'm saying it as a mixed person: yes, he is very white passing, OP. But people ARE being weird about him because they _know_ he's mixed. Race is a social construct after all, you don't always has too look the part so to speak for people to be racist to you.

It's really telling that people are calling you racist for not realizing he was Asian. You know what's racist? The fact that Asians who look like him don't tend to get cast in Asian roles, if at all (they usually get the roles where being Asian is only inferred by their name or something and not stated at all, definitely not as a plot point), because they don't look Asian enough. It's no wonder someone who doesn't live around many Asian people would only recognize someone with media-approved very Asian features as Asian, because that's the only representation they see and they honestly with all innocence think that's how all Asians look.

Extra little story here. In Firefly's heyday, when I watched it I assumed Simon and River and their actors WERE East Asian, at least partially. Because of the sorta Chinese influence of the setting and the fact that I live in an area with a large Asian population and knew Asian people who looked similar to the actors. As it turned out, the actors were not Asian. But it was reasonable of me to assume they could be. Race is a spectrum you don't often see in media.

OP isn't rascist because they didn't think he was Asian, the racism is in how they are describing this person as odd looking and weird.
