Out of curiosity, does Steam need a specific version of Linux to work?

There may be some distros where it doesn't work well but a lot of games have linux versions and Steam has it's own native linux converter which it automatically downloaded as soon as I installed a game, so all the newbie distros should work fine. I went with Mint Cinnamon since it's basically a windows clone designed for people who are used to windows. I also confirmed that all my current games and the ones I have my eye on for the next few years were fully compatible with linux.

Note: you can't play multi-player games on linux because the linux code gets caught in the anti-cheat codes.
