I got really into RPF when depressed and disillusioned by the world for a few years and came very, very close to that second camp, though I had misgivings about participating openly. I can speak from experience when I say that being... like that... is often a sign that something in one's life has gone horribly wrong. I still do RPF from time to time but I'm a lot less Serious about it in that way and I cannot overstate how much better it feels when I'm not obsessive and bad-weird about it. It's more like I'm basing a character off of a real person (think the Beatles cartoons and movies) than I am doing paparazzi-level stalking "for accuracy".

Which is to say that you're onto something, but yeah this is not a statement you make with your identity attached.

I think this was supposed to be a response to me and not OP. But yeah I get what you mean.

In bandom in general I find it to be a lot of one type and a lot of the other type mostly because what else is there to write fic about, right? I have dabbled in the first type - as RPF comedy fics - and people comment going like "haha great reference to whatever thing that came up in some interview" and I was like uh, well, I had absolutely no idea that was a thing. I am making everything up about these people based on their fictional personas. I don't know anything about them! They are basically cartoons.
