It's been more than twenty years and this is still one of the best father/daughter relationships I've ever seen. The older I get, the more sad realizations I have about my own parents, especially my dad. It's become the hardest part of rewatching this show. I will never have a parent who loves and supports me like this. It's hard to explain to other people why a teenage girl detective show is making me cry so much.

Their relationship didn’t seem realistic to me at all. Shows and movies aimed at teens always have parents who are perfect for their special star of the show child’s needs or they’re background noise or they’re the absolute worst people in the world and that’s why their kid is off doing all the things they have to do for the show or movie. It’s a fun fantasy when they’re like Keith but it’s just a fantasy.

I don’t think AYRT necessarily meant that.

To me, it read more like a reassurance that real parents can’t meet the fantasy of fiction, so maybe OP should rethink how they compare their own experience to the show. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t still hurt to see a fantasy you’ve been denied, but I think it can still be a helpful reminder.

That's fair, and I hope you're right. But it's worth noting that Keith Mars isn't portrayed as the perfect fantasy dad. Like Veronica, he makes mistakes and there are consequences for those mistakes. What makes him a good father figure is that through it all, he loves his kid, tries to do what's best for her, and apologizes and tries to make amends when he fucks up.

I was gonna say. I haven't watched the show in years but I don't recall him ever being portrayed as perfect; he had his flaws and didn't always make the right decisions, but through it all it was very obvious that he cared and really was trying to do his best.

Yes. IMO, that's a pretty realistic portrayal of good parenting. Life doesn't always work out, even when you try and do the right thing - frankly, that's an ongoing theme of the whole damn show.

He isn’t perfect, he’s perfect for her. He’s unfailingly supportive, his mistakes make them both stronger, he’s conveniently present or absent when that makes the best narrative sense for her character, he always says exactly the right thing, etc.

This is what I meant! It’s just a fantasy and it’s lovely but there is no good to come from measuring our real against fantasies.

I don't agree. My dad is also not a great guy. Comparing him to other father figures (both real and fictional) made me realize how deficient he is. The knowledge doesn't make me happy, but it does make me wiser about how to handle him, how much of my emotional effort to give our relationship, and why he behaves the way he does.

It's true that comparison can be the thief of joy, but if I didn't have a better role model to compare him to, I still wouldn't be over here rejoicing about my dad. That saying is for people who have perfectly good dads, but obsess over fantasy perfect dads.

Secret OP is suffering because of comparing their real life to a fantasy. That’s not good. And they seem to think Keith is a realistic father and possibly a very common type. But the interactions that make him such a perfect-for-Veronica father are all narrative choices. Life doesn’t work that way.
