Sorry the troll followed me the next day to a new thread. I’ve disengaged but honestly this is exactly why I think Not Secrets shouldn’t be posted. Someone clearly feels they know exactly which of the hundreds of possible interpretations the secret OP meant and won’t let up on someone who doesn’t acknowledge their superiority and rightness.

I'm ambivalent when it comes to remakes of movies or TV shows, but I will always support remakes of video games.

They're a media that was 100% constrained by the technology and the storage format of their time, and there's nothing that's more of a bummer than reading interviews with video game devs talking about things they wanted to put into a particular game but quite literally couldn't either because it wasn't possible with the technology they had at the time or they couldn't fit it onto the disc.

If a remake means they get to make the game according to their original vision for it? Worth it.

Yep! It's fun to enjoy the new gameplay and fanworks and they don't change the story a lot (unless it's FFVIIR which is more compislop but they called it a remake to sell)

Yeah, it's better when they add new stuff, but also, it's a great opportunity to fix issues and just make it more approachable to new players overall.

There's also the fact that a lot of old formats are dying. Sometimes games made for older machines are flat out unplayable on new ones due to technical issues.

Remakes that add extra functions like colorblind modes also do a lot for accessibility.

Yeah, I really enjoy playing old games ported to ROMs, but there is a fair bit of fiddling around involved and it's not the ideal environment to play them, despite many hobbyists putting a fuckton of time and work into them. So whenever there's a remake or even just a refresh, I'm thrilled! And the old game still exists.

I support remakes primarily because of availability; old games can be tiresome to get running through emulation or on modern operating systems, or expensive to get both the game and the hardware to play it on if you're going for accuracy, or just plain impossible to acquire

Like movies, game remakes are good in theory but usually bad in execution. Pokemon is probably the most egregious example, since ORAS they cut more features than they remove and cool scrapped content is definitely not getting used. BDSP was the worst yet. All I want would be upscaled DS remasters with wifi and trading features re enabled. And for most games, a good remaster would not only be better but cheaper. (Though those can be fucked up too, like those Square remasters with the terrible Arial font, and I was really not a fan of the pixel art being turned into HD style for the Suikoden remasters, it's the only thing that stopped me buying it)

So my opinion is improve it by fixing bugs and jank, restore dead wifi features, but dear god, leave the original art, music and content alone unless it's just upscaling / polishing blurry low poly 3d graphics. What are the remakes considered the best?

I prefer games with an endless mode, or at least a newgame+.

If the game runs its length and just... ends, I always end up putting off finishing it.

It's been more than twenty years and this is still one of the best father/daughter relationships I've ever seen. The older I get, the more sad realizations I have about my own parents, especially my dad. It's become the hardest part of rewatching this show. I will never have a parent who loves and supports me like this. It's hard to explain to other people why a teenage girl detective show is making me cry so much.

There's a recc'er who has been going for over 20 years, posting a multi-fandom rec list every month. I absolutely love their taste, we share most fandoms, the ones we don't they tend to convince me to join - they are the Gardner Dozois of fanfic for me.

But last month most of the entries on the rec list were for Heated Rivalry. I'm glad they've found a new fandom, and they owe me NOTHING, but still...
