I’ve read the comment over many times and at no point do the question marks disappear. Maybe you should get your eyes checked.

So, this may come as a shock to you? But people can use punctuation incorrectly? Just because it has a question mark doesn't mean that it's a question. That also doesn't mean that questions can't be assumptions.

So, you didn't do well in English class? Or you've forgotten everything taught in English class? Something else? (<---not actually a question, just like comment OP's)

The secret trails off, inviting readers to finish the secret. Two specific guesses were made, and made clearly as guesses. A third clearly invited OP to fill in the blank for themselves. I’m sorry that you didn’t read it the way it was intended but it’s honestly weird that you’re doubling down on the questions being statements instead of questions even after it was pointed out that aren’t statements. Instead you’ve decided someone doesn’t know the difference between a period and a question mark, which is frankly an insane assumption.

So, when did you stop beating your sister?

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m sorry, I have no idea what this means. It reads like a reference to something but I do not know what.

So you haven't? So you're abusive?

I think I see what you’re trying to do. Sorry if I didn’t play along right. I forgot this community is for Americans only and ESL are not welcome.

They are comparing the random question in comment OP to the random question of beating your sister. Both seem out of the blue.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
The original questions are not out of the blue though. The secret OP never tells their secret. The questions are probable conclusions to the secret based on historical secret submissions but are clearly guesses.

(frozen comment) Are you trolling?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
You have to be at this point.

(frozen comment) Re: Are you trolling?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
No. They’re literally questions. I’m baffled that apparently multiple people think they aren’t. If you read the comment immediately after the secret it makes narrative sense. The questions beings statements makes no sense either in conjunction with the secret or as a standalone comment.

If you would genuinely like a little explanation on rhetorical questions and other “speech acts”, let me know.

Sometimes it’s a thing people just don’t learn or think about.

AYRT
But they clearly are NOT rhetorical questions. I would however love an explanation for why multiple people can read the comment in its entirety after the secret and think the questions aren’t questions. The comment spells out that the meaning of the secret isn’t clear and is questioning what it is.

Okay. You’re right, it isn’t a rhetorical question because it does expect an answer.

However, the questions still contain information about the questioner’s thoughts and assumptions. The comment presented two possible interpretations of the secret that were explicitly about bitterness. It also left open the possibility that there were other interpretations they hadn’t thought of.

If I asked you to interpret a piece of art and you said it might be about sadness for a lost love or it might be about sadness for a lost child or might be about something else, I think a reasonable observer would understand that you perceived some sadness in it, even if you left room open for other interpretations.

Do with that what you will.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Or the assumption is that secrets tend to be people bitter or disappointed about things so that would be a safe guess and has nothing to do with the state of the mind of the person who doesn’t understand what the secret OP means.

Jesus fucking Christ it’s like an Abbot and Costello sketch in here tonight.

Normalize recognizing when you're wrong, instead of being defensive and insulting because you're embarrassed.

It is because you used biterness specifically, which people read to mean you specifically inferred biterness in the secret. If you had left it non specific and asked what the secret was about in an open way nobody would have had a problem.

Yes, I think I was trying to say this in more meandering terms.

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
DA I don't think anyone even had a problem with someone assuming bitterness? Assuming bitterness wasn't the weird part. The insistence that nobody said it sounded bitter was the weird part.

Idk. When like 5 different people are like 'no, that comment definitely sounded like it was assuming bitterness' maybe it came off a way they didn't intend and it's not everyone else who is wrong...

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
The insistence that nobody said it sounded bitter was the weird part.

True! I thought they were confused why people were saying it sounded bitter, because they seem to think making it a question negated the bitter part. Or something?

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Leaving it non specific would just muddy it though since the secret is already muddy. The secret is quite literally missing the secret part.

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's not. They don't care for Heated Rivalry recs. It's obvious.

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Leaving it open would not muddy it. Asking "so what do you mean?" instead of "do you mean you are bitter?" would have been an acceptable option.

(frozen comment) Re: Uh...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-07 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So the point of your comment is that you're an asshat making bad faith interpretations of peoples' comments just to stir the pot?
