What is the deal

(Anonymous) 2026-03-08 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
with people just being like, incredibly nitpicky and argumentative here lately?

I feel like for the last week or so, there have been huge numbers of comments of people going back-and-forth pointlessly. No one is changing anyone's mind. It's just these petty arguments that do.not.stop. It's weird because I feel like it usually doesn't get THAT ridiculous here.

I think some people reply in good faith assuming someone is seeking clarification. I'm on the fence if the other half is honestly not understanding or just being difficult.

I do think secret 1 from yesterday is apt though.

no u!!

idk, but when people have things of substance to say I don't mind reading them. Debate over ideas is interesting to see. When it gets to back and forth insults or condescending oh ~hun~ bless ur heart responses which lbr are the same thing, it's very tedious though.

I'm wondering if they're new and/or very young. And yeah, I don't get it either. Massive projections, hyperbole and abrasiveness for no reason. Like nobody taught them to just sit back and actually process a comment before replying, or even the concept that they aren't obligated to comment on every little thing.

I admit it's pretty funny when someone leaves a comment to tell someone else they shouldn't have left a comment though. Not saying you're doing that, saying I've seen it happen and I'm just like... everybody involved could've ignored something instead of starting a fight... nobody is superior here... lol

"The"? A singular, dedicated troll? I only just started taking Dreamwidth seriously, so I'm out of the loop on this.

There are two. Both think the other troll is the only troll.

it could actually be 2 or 3 different people but for sure we have some very dedicated trolls here, some of whom seem to have legit mental health issues based on some of their responses. it's best not to engage with them when they're active.

Many of them feel like bad faith rage bait. Sometimes I can't help but get into it. But I've gotten better at not engaging, because I know that's what the rage baiter wants. The compassionate side of myself feels bad that there is at least one person out there who is sad or feeling bad about themselves that they go seeking for attention just to get some form of power by upsetting others. But at the same time, it's annoying to have to see that nonsense and to know Case has to deal with locking threads and deleting comments.

And in general, we are living in tense and precarious times. So I think people are feeling defensive and our tempers a little quick to boil over.

Reminder to myself to be a little less reactionary

When I see an oddly over-the-top aggressive reaction to an innocuous comment or secret, I immediately disengage. I don't even read the replies. Sometimes, things seem to go south in an organic way, but other times, it does seem like someone is trying to bait an argument.

Overly literal nerds ruin everything, that is what.

People with unexamined biases commenting on secrets/in ways that show those unexamined biases and then get angry when those biases are pointed out.

Or it could be that someone expressed themselves unclearly and when called out on it and they explained themselves, someone decided to spend the next day trolling the fuck out them and then bringing it to multiple threads. If the troll knew how to read, they’d see the reason for the so-called unexamined biases. But you’re unable to comprehend how predictive guesses work and instead you call them unexamined biases. The irony is fucking delicious. That you come off as a second year who just had their first intro to psychology lesson is the cherry on top.

That would be funny if it weren't so sad. The person who admitted that they were ESL and was getting three or four native English speakers to explain to them how they were wrong in their English decided that, no, they definitely know English better than the native speakers, but it's the native speaker who can't read English. Sure, Jan. In any event, I'm not going to make Case freeze this one, he's had it hard enough from this bullshit already. In the future, when people who are more knowledgeable on a subject than you are tell you you're wrong, maybe believe them.

I hope your clothes get caught on doorknobs until you learn some humility.

(frozen comment) Re: What is the deal

(Anonymous) 2026-03-08 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
So no, you didn’t read the explanation. They’re guesses. And no one explained why they can’t understand that. I DID admit I expressed myself unclearly. That you want me to say I am wrong is strange because it is not the same thing. And now you say it is unexamined biases to say bitter but no, that’s predictive reasoning.

Anyway, I won’t wish you anything as you did to me. I can say I’m the one who hasn’t been insulting to others in this debacle unlike you and some other comments. Why you want to wish even mild inconveniences on someone is beyond me but I leave that issue for you to work on.

As the source of all the wank yesterday I can tell you that I haven’t been in any of the previous exchanges and the cause for yesterday is that I’m being very literal and it’s pissing a lot of people off. It’s why I think the moratorium on Not Secrets should be brought back. No amount of people telling me that I’m the problem will change the fact that people are merely inferring the secret and that doesn’t actually make a secret. That one or two people decided to troll me is just FS being FS.
