Re: Do you consume true crime?

Yes. My preference is for the forensic science side of it, or historical. I also like unsolved mysteries in general. TV shows like Forensic Files, Murder Maps that philstar already mentioned is a good one, 48 Hours, FBI Files. One shot documentaries if they're decent. For Youtube channels, Just Thought Lounge, Cold Case Detective, Crime A to Z, Truly Criminal.

Not really. I often follow missing persons cases via the news and a true crime group that’s a little different than the true crime fannish ones. Mostly we just search out news and speculate. The group does that for many crimes including cold cases but usually it’s just missing persons cases that I follow. The group will turn ghoulish for some of the big cases and the mod team isn’t quite as good at stamping that out as they used to be.
I do find some true crime shows interesting but haven’t watched any in a long time. Joe Kenda was still on air the last time I watched.

I try to avoid them because they're stressful for me, I hate making appointments, and going there, but once I'm there, I'm fine.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP. It's not that the fandom of 20+ years ago wasn't judgmental, but it sure as hell was on a much smaller scale and the voices of reason were more numerous and loud.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's good then.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I don't watch true crime content where it feels like the creator is glorifying it or wallowing in their enjoyment. Looking at you, My Favorite Murder!

I always had great dentists until the pandemic. Now it’s like they’ve all retired or died off or something. I’ve gone through more dentists in the last five years than in the 45 years before that. My last dentist visit was just that: my last.

Fandom definitely got wanky and ship wars could get really heated. But as others have said, you could avoid it and still partake in fandom. Now antis are puriteens are everywhere. The most recent comments I’ve gotten on my fics from 2009-2012 are all bitching that my explicit fics have explicit content. My one kink fic must have come up on someone’s radar because for a month I was bombarded with comments from people outraged I wrote that kink that was clearly tagged and included in the summary. It’s literally insane.

Yeah, historical stuff (so before my lifetime) I will read. Current stuff or the amateur sleuth stuff, no.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
The name of that podcast alone is enough to ensure that I'll never listen to it.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! So many people just had dedicated websites for their interests, usually a specific series or ships. But forums were ideal, imo, any sort of anti was generally overwhelmed by people who wanted to be there and mods were involved in the community and generally cut any real problems short, we had profiles but they weren't connected to our face and life like so many people today do.
idk, the way they were set up just allowed conversation the way today doesn't. The algorithm just gets too many people, and it's so annoying to navigate nowadays. The scrolling and binging just seems to invite the come-and-go relationship and I have such a hard time interacting with that.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
It really does. Good eye OP!

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I'll be a gen I & II lover forever!

I don't mind the dentist that much, and I've only been in the hospital twice but it was such major stuff I didn't have time to worry about it. I haaaaaate going to the doctor, though. It just feels like they have no time for you, will refer you to other places for labs and to specialists for various stuff which is a pain in the ass, and I'm afraid of being told I have something horrible wrong with me lol.

Everyone involved has to be dead and gone. I recently listened to a series on Jack the Ripper and another about Lord Lucan. The latter was definitely too modern for me. The Ripper murders were on the cusp of what I can cope with.

My book club's read-of-the-month is a very recent account of the murder of children. I got about five pages into it and went, "Nope."

I have a fear of doctors that is well-founded. Finding one that's competent and not a misogynistic oaf is rare.

no way in hell

Re: Doctor, Dentist, Hospital?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Same!
I don't mind dentist, only the bill.
But doctors referring is the best fucking outcome and it sucks! I mostly get "you are too fat get thin" and gtfo. I am not even obese, just fat, so this is fun.
Also lot of my family died from cancer, so it's a fear

I have heard a story of a couple playing Pearl Jam's "Betterman" as their wedding song, and the only way that makes sense to me is if it's the song that broke the ice for them ("Oh, you like Pearl Jam too?!").

Music makes a scene more than most things, I find. You only get truly great moments when everything fits. Case in point:

Do you mind if I ask why? My sister and mother both are terrified of the dentist, both for evaluatory and because of past experiences, but I just remember all those horror stories we got in cartoons and they stuck, lol.

Re: Have you ever dealt with fandom antis?

This is the best way

Re: Doctor, Dentist, Hospital?

Not afraid, at the dentist I'll say BEFORE I SIT DOWN that I want all of the painkillers, then they can drill away or whatever they need to.

The real problem for me is getting an appointment from the public sector :/

Re: Have you ever dealt with fandom antis?

Started cultivating my own small groups of fandom friends tbh. A lot of anti arguments used to appeal to me (I have pretty bad PTSD and can fall into black and white thinking, the idea that stuff that triggered me could actually be dangerous "made sense" on a purely emotional level) but as time wore on in those fandom circles I realized how judgy and obsessive everyone was about policing each other, and I started seriously questioning whether the anti views made any sense at all. I never was one to harass people over their ships anyway, just block and focus on what I liked instead, so the hatereading and harassment I was seeing, and the obsessive standards for shipping (calling out age gaps... between adults... where the younger person is in their 30s??!!) weirded me out. I took a break from fandom to work on my mental health (doing a lot better now, idgaf what anyone ships in a fictional story LOL) and when I came back I stuck to smaller groups for the most part.

Fandom was never non-judgey and accepting. What you miss is you being the judgey gatekeepery one who could run people off, and now other people are that and you are pissed you lost power.
