I miss the acceptance of fandom. Now it’s known in the wider world and judgement came with that knowledge. It shows in the art, the fics, and on social media.
I just want to enjoy my fandom, damnit!

Well... if Trevor is doing the judging, I don't mind so much. Everyone else though, yeah, they're just gonna have to deal because I'm shipping what I want.

I dunno, the fandom nickname for a character has been accepted and used by the creators and the actor and that's amazing.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-10 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly though why does it matter what the actors think? Id rather they not be aware of fandom.

+1. Being back the fourth wall!

This, please.

This is the sort of thing that would come up at conventions.

The character in question doesn't have a real name because he's a body double for a major character. His nickname references this.

Character: Robert House.
Body double nickname: Bobby Apartment.

I just let them know that telling me I can't ship that or like this makes me ship and like that thing harder to spite them. 😎

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I for one appreciate the effort!

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Same, I can be petty like that. You don't want me to do XYZ? Well, I'm gonna do XYZ even harder now. 😎

I agree! I think it def fucked up fandom. People put so much more stock in what actors or directors say when really it shouldn't matter. Write your fic, make your art or fanvids, and have fun. Fandom isn't supposed to be about being "right" or getting people who aren't even in the fandom to try to validate you or something.

+100

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
The thing is, though, fandom has always been judgy. It's just that we now see it without rose coloured glasses because it's more accepted to be in a fandom.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree, and I think a lot of it is the internet being so mainstream and the lack of proper forums and websites. I miss it too.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I agree. Now that we don't have more specific places that are... I mean, forums weren't generally *private*, but you had to search for them to find them, vs social media being much more open and the algorithm pushing stuff onto people. It's a lot more open and come-and-go vs having dedicated communities with people who were more invested and stuck around.

Creators getting involved in fandom just... worries me a lot of the time. Still got bad memories of Butch Hartman's overinvolvement and the mess that was his official forum.

He basically enabled a bunch of teenage "BNF fans as mods to try and police his fandom across the internet. And many of them acted like they had some fandom authority and if they declared someone banned a "bad person" they would add them to a list of people on the forum not to associate with lest THEY get banned by association.

Like modern day antis but with a heavily "Christian family values" lean.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP. It's not that the fandom of 20+ years ago wasn't judgmental, but it sure as hell was on a much smaller scale and the voices of reason were more numerous and loud.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 06:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom was never non-judgey and accepting. What you miss is you being the judgey gatekeepery one who could run people off, and now other people are that and you are pissed you lost power.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
No. There was generally a place for most people, and if you couldn't find one that fit, you could make a comm of your own. Don't be so cagey.
