Wouldn't fit on the secret but want to add underneath

SECRET BECAUSE - Everyone I know loves it and comments I see online always love it too. I'm not hating. It's a well written book for sure, I just don't get the hype and wanted to say it somewhere and see if anyone feels the same.

A big clue that the Earth Alliance in Babylon 5 is the evil version of Star Trek is their ship names. Their "hero" ships are named for genociders like Agamemnon, Cortez, Churchill.

Nice foreshadowing, JMS, nice.

When stressing on daunting tasks, what helps me through is hearing Tim Gunn inside my head, saying sternly with care, "Make it work."

I always do find ways to make things work. Thanks Tim!

Anybody remember the black glitter spiderweb dress Olga wears in Singin' in the Rain? In my own personal headcanon that's the outfit Maleficent would have worn if she'd been invited to the party. (animated!Maleficent, not Angelina.)

I've never skated or done gymnastics, but my family is ex-Soviet and I have heard a lot of horror stories about how they trained worked their athletes, which attitudes I strongly suspect linger to this day in the classically Soviet-dominated sports.

Which is why Alysa Liu's long routine feels so healing to me. She's like good vibes on skates. No stress, just fun and enjoyment of the art. I even skip or ignore her jumps and go to the end part that's just dancing. My favorite moment is a tie between that crazy knee spin she does and the side split jump where, if you watch her hands, she does a basketball dunk.

Transcript - Pride and Prejudice

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the character of Elizabeth rude, arrogant, proud and judging. On top of that hypocritical seeing that she judges everyone else for the traits she herself displays. I don't understand why she is so beloved or relatable to readers. At least we're told the others are annoying. I also feel like this book is to blame for every rom com with an unlikable couple who meet, have a misunderstanding that could be cleared up if they talked like adults, and aren't really very romantic at all. At least to me. I don't get why this book is held up as the best love story ever at all. I found it cold.

I see what you mean. I think some people like to project onto her [like Twilight's Bella] and just like the idea of bantering/liking Mr. Darcy etc. I think what's nice about Elizabeth and Darcy is that they really end up trusting each other/sharing secrets etc, and him trying to help her/her family is just a moving thing for anyone to do for another person. I also feel like there are lots of good vibes in the book that make people rate it super high, like jane/bingley being so sweet in the end, and Georgiana-Darcy's sibling tie etc. Imho if the costumes/sets in the 1995 version weren't so beautiful, I feel like P&P would be a tiny bit less considered perfect/the epitome of romance etc. Just my opinion.

What turns me off P&P a little bit [though I do like it] is having to be around/reading about annoying characters for so long at times, like Lady C, the Bingley sisters, most of the Bennet family, Collins etc. That gets annoying for me, it's not fun to watch those parts imho.

So you're saying you found the characters in Pride and Prejudice proud and prejudiced?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Elizabeth is all of those things...and she gets over it. Darcy is the same...and he gets over it. That's the title, that's what the book is about.

Right? I read that secret and was like... uh... *looks at the title, looks at the secret, looks at the title again*

The reason why their misunderstanding wasn't easy to clear up with a short chat.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Darcy didn't know Elizabeth at the start of the novel. Her family doesn't impress him because several members are very loose-lipped with bad manners. So of course he isn't going to take her aside and say, "Hey, I know you think I'm a mean poopyhead, but I'm mad at Wickham because he groomed my 15 year old sister to gain her fortune and revenge himself upon me, and it came very close to ruining her reputation and her whole life. Wickham's a sexual predator, bruh!"

To protect Georgiana, he'd keep what Wickham did secret, if possible.

It's a damn fine dress!

Agreed, especially on the second point. I HATE that dynamic, but it's super popular.

Not to mention, "comedy of manners" is a whole genre called that because of the importance of manners and what is proper to say to whom and when if you don't want to ruin your social standing forever. And that made a lot of what we would call "easy conversations" not easy to even think about having.

...Japan was the top contenders, what does soviet/ex-soviet have anything to do with this? Russia and Belarus were not even able to compete shy the one neutral athlete.
