Wouldn't fit on the secret but want to add underneath

SECRET BECAUSE - Everyone I know loves it and comments I see online always love it too. I'm not hating. It's a well written book for sure, I just don't get the hype and wanted to say it somewhere and see if anyone feels the same.

Transcript - Pride and Prejudice

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I find the character of Elizabeth rude, arrogant, proud and judging. On top of that hypocritical seeing that she judges everyone else for the traits she herself displays. I don't understand why she is so beloved or relatable to readers. At least we're told the others are annoying. I also feel like this book is to blame for every rom com with an unlikable couple who meet, have a misunderstanding that could be cleared up if they talked like adults, and aren't really very romantic at all. At least to me. I don't get why this book is held up as the best love story ever at all. I found it cold.

So you're saying you found the characters in Pride and Prejudice proud and prejudiced?

Yes, Elizabeth is all of those things...and she gets over it. Darcy is the same...and he gets over it. That's the title, that's what the book is about.

The reason why their misunderstanding wasn't easy to clear up with a short chat.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Darcy didn't know Elizabeth at the start of the novel. Her family doesn't impress him because several members are very loose-lipped with bad manners. So of course he isn't going to take her aside and say, "Hey, I know you think I'm a mean poopyhead, but I'm mad at Wickham because he groomed my 15 year old sister to gain her fortune and revenge himself upon me, and it came very close to ruining her reputation and her whole life. Wickham's a sexual predator, bruh!"

To protect Georgiana, he'd keep what Wickham did secret, if possible.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, especially on the second point. I HATE that dynamic, but it's super popular.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-11 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's.... that's kinda the point.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
This secret is so fucking funny. Did you read the title of the book before you read it, OP

It's okay to dislike the character, but acting like her flaws weren't supposed to be flaws is hilariously obtuse

'Fess up, OP!

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
You did that to yank our collective chains, didn't you? LOL...

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Did you think only Darcy was meant to be "wrong" in the setup...?

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
it's fine if bickering couple is not a dynamic you enjoy, OP (and I personally think it can go from 'these people enjoy sparring, testing each other's wits, having a worthy playmate for their own' or 'these people start off disliking each other but grow to have a deep respect and fondness for each other that still includes lovingly giving each other shit sometimes' to 'oh you just wrote two people that genuinely don't like each other but made them kiss at the end' in the hands of less skilled writers, or writers who are not terribly invested in the romance subplot of a bigger action/comedy/adventure/scifi/whatever. and it's a dynamic that VERY much needs attention and skill to pull off.

but it certainly didn't start with P&P. Benedict and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing have them beat by centuries, and I'm sure if I were more well-read on my medieval lais and ancient epics, I could dig up another example or two.

the thing about "they start off sincerely not liking each other and then come around" is that it....provides a narrative arc. Actual tension, actual development. And in P&P's case, because their flaws are significant and real, that romantic development is woven into the character development. Which is a lot more nuanced than "outside forces conspired to keep us apart, but now they don't" which can involve a well-written plot that just isn't as tied to the characters, or "the personal reasons we didn't like each other at first were always trivial and contrived misunderstandings that can be dispensed with as soon as the writer gets to the part of their outline where we switch to being passionately in love," which is a well-worn cliche at this point.

Honestly I think of P&P a lot like Lord of the Rings - it's iconic because there's a lot of really genuine quality and depth and nuance of story there, but precisely because they did inspire so many less-nuanced imitators, the shallow surface level versions of what they're doing have become annoying and widespread clichés. Also, they have their own quirks and a fairly dry writing style which simply isn't for everyone.

TLDR: it's fine if you didn't like the book, but this is a very uncharitable view of what it's doing.

I wish I had been told at a young age, characters are supposed to be unlikable or flawed (maybe both). That's how they grow in the journey of their story. That's what makes them interesting characters, makes them feel real. Elizabeth Bennett being judgemental and prideful was intentional.
And I don't think she was a bad character. I love that she's relatable to a lot of people (girls/women especially).

A big clue that the Earth Alliance in Babylon 5 is the evil version of Star Trek is their ship names. Their "hero" ships are named for genociders like Agamemnon, Cortez, Churchill.

Nice foreshadowing, JMS, nice.

Babylon 5 secret! Also, the Earth Alliance isn't full evil. It has evil parts, and the people in charge for a while were evil. But there are good parts left, that was the whole point of the civil war. And the good won out.

Anybody remember the black glitter spiderweb dress Olga wears in Singin' in the Rain? In my own personal headcanon that's the outfit Maleficent would have worn if she'd been invited to the party. (animated!Maleficent, not Angelina.)

I've never skated or done gymnastics, but my family is ex-Soviet and I have heard a lot of horror stories about how they trained worked their athletes, which attitudes I strongly suspect linger to this day in the classically Soviet-dominated sports.

Which is why Alysa Liu's long routine feels so healing to me. She's like good vibes on skates. No stress, just fun and enjoyment of the art. I even skip or ignore her jumps and go to the end part that's just dancing. My favorite moment is a tie between that crazy knee spin she does and the side split jump where, if you watch her hands, she does a basketball dunk.
