Selling on eBay

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2026-03-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I’m selling some things on eBay for the first time.

Any tips? Is it worth it to accept “promoting” your listing and giving eBay a bigger cut of the price?

Professional seller here, and no, don't waste your money on promotions. Instead, focus on taking good photos, writing a detailed, ACCURATE description, and making sure that your pricing is in line with whatever that item is currently selling for. According to eBay, 75% of the listings in my primary category are promoted and yet I make sales in that category almost every day without promotions because I focus on making my listings look like I'm a serious seller who will pack their items carefully and ship out promptly instead of someone just listing things out of their closet who may or may not know what they're doing.

To make your photos look nice and professional, use a white background if you can (white posterboard or a white sheet or towel will work just fine!) and try to get the best lighting you can to really make the item pop in the pictures. I use daylight bulbs to get a nice bright light that shows colors accurately. Make sure you get a photo from every angle - eBay gives you 24 photos, so use them!

If it has any flaws, make sure to mention them in the title, the item specifics and the description, and take up-close photos of the flaws so that buyers know exactly what they're getting. There are plenty of buyers who are happy to purchase things with minor flaws as long as they know about them beforehand!

Also, be aware that if you're a brand new seller, your payments will be held for a bit until you've established a record of successful sales. eBay does this because in the past, too many fraudsters would list items, receive a payment for them and then disappear without ever shipping, so they want to be sure that you're on the up and up before they release the money to you.

Great advice!

If you're selling clothes, please put measurements on (just put a yardstick on the items and show how wide the chest is on shirts and how long they are, etc.)

The reason for this is that sizes are so inconsistent across brands (and eras!) and things that are vintage/used sometimes shrink.

I once bought an XL women's sweater that was a boy's XL and there were no measurements! Never again will I buy items without measurements.

Oof, I've done that. Luckily I could gift them to my sister who fit into them, but I never even thought to question it at the time.
