TIKKA MASALA LAY'S CHIPS. They haunt me. I want them back.

These kind of gross candies that they don't make anymore. https://www.kroger.com/product/images/xlarge/front/0001130012146

fabric and trim off the bolt just because it's pretty and feels nice.

I'm limited to only buying what I need when I have a project for it, and/or I'm guaranteed it's the right color, weight, and I'm not overbuying a whole yard when I only need a quarter. I can't afford to just throw wrong fabrics into my stash right now. I miss the freedom of just going ooooo shiny 2.5 yards please.

I'd love to have a fabric store within 25 miles of me. Ever since Joanne closed there's really nothing but the fat quarters at Walmart, which only gets you so far if you're trying to make clothes or a large tote bag or the like.

Same! I hate ordering fabric online, too. I always end up with a bunch of stuff that isn’t just right. My town does have a Hobby Lobby but I won’t shop there. Our Walmart has a nice selection but it’s all pretty low quality so it has limited usage. For instance, I can use their solids for quilts but only if I do patchwork quilts. HSTs are out of the question even though I’m super experienced with them and my machine never eats them except when I use the Walmart fabrics because they fall apart as soon as you cut them. That also means they don’t sew nice and square.

I miss Joann’s so much. I wish the nearby Michael’s was one of the ones with fabric but it isn’t going to happen. Michael’s has a very limited plan for stocking fabric in stores and won’t be adding it to many more than they already have.

Local quilt shops are another matter. First, you can pretty much just quilting fabric there. So if you need anything else you need to order online from Amazon or one of the tiny suppliers. And there are far fewer tiny suppliers today than there were a year ago.

The other issues with local quilt shops is they usually have a pretty small selection and they tend to focus on fabrics aimed at making pink bay quilts for girls or religious themes. Plus, I live in the south so all the LQS are run by elderly southern Baptist women who are super judgey and fake nice and do not approve of my existence. They may serve me but odds are they’ll mis-cut and it’s guaranteed they’ll make a ton of little digs at me the whole time.

Joann’s was my paradise and I really don’t know how sewing hobbies will continue if we don’t get a replacement in the next few years :(

My favourite memories with my mother has always been going to the fabric store with her. I loved looking at all, the different bolts and textures and colours. There was no other place like it.

Craft supplies in person

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
So many craft stores around me closed and the one that is still open doesn't really have much variety. Like they have one brand of paint and zero woodworking stuff or sewing material. I miss being able to assess hands-on the materials I'm thinking of for projects.

Re: Craft supplies in person

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I hear ya. Michael's is merely... okay, Joanne's is gone and I would prefer never to do business with Hobby Lobby even if it weren't 25+ miles away.

Trying to make a red thai curry with no recipe

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2026-03-11 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone see any flaws in my plan?

Sear chicken off, add garlic, onion, ginger. Saute for a bit. Add curry paste. Heat for like 30 seconds. Add coconut milk. Get everything mixed. Add green beans (frozen) and bell pepper (fresh). Let is simmer for like 10 minutes. Add bamboo shoots (canned never used before). Simmer for another few minutes. Serve with rice.

Re: Trying to make a red thai curry with no recipe

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Looks amazing! But I’d try to thaw the green beans a little. Either toss them in a pan on medium low for five minutes or throw them in the microwave for like 2-3 minutes on 5 or 4 (out of 10). Or even just let them sit in some hot tap water for a few minutes before adding to the main mixture. They’re just so dense that 10 minutes from frozen doesn’t seem long enough.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Personally I'd saute the beans and peppers too, but I don't like them being too crunchy so that might just be a me thing.

Let us know how it turns out!

Honestly, the only thing I’d do differently is stir the curry paste into the coconut milk and add it that way, but it’s because I use a cast iron skillet and the curry paste ends up tasting burnt.

Sounds fine to me, so long as your curry paste is decent. But simmer long enough for the oil to separate on top of the curry, that's how you know it's done.

Cat Question

[personal profile] philstar22 2026-03-11 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
My cat had dental surgery today. 2 teeth pulled. I'm keeping an eye on her, only gave her a little dinner to see if she keeps it down. But is there anything else I should keep an eye on or worry about?

Selling on eBay

[personal profile] iff_and_xor 2026-03-12 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
I’m selling some things on eBay for the first time.

Any tips? Is it worth it to accept “promoting” your listing and giving eBay a bigger cut of the price?

Hysterectomy

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I know a few users said they've had one. What was the recovery period like?

I need to have it done but I have a job that includes heavy lifting and is pretty active and I can't really take much time off. Even 2 weeks (the minimum recovery I've seen) is asking a lot. Right now I'm thinking my best bet is to do it when I'm between jobs (I'm ignoring the whole insurance issue rn) but that wouldn't be for possibly 2-3 more years.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-12 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it has been forever since I had some media to be excited about but One Piece season 2 just released and I'm looking forward to spacing that out once I get home* and I am tentatively hopeful about the Project Hail Mary movie!

Mandalorian and Grogu, which is weird because I haven't watched passed the first season of the show because I got bored (minus a few clips like the Luke one). But the movie looks fun.

Avengers: Doomsday potentially. Coyote vs. Acme maybe. Moana live action maybe.

Dune 3 for sure.

The Odyssey. Supergirl. Jumanji 4. The ATLA animated movie.

Season 2 of Ahsoka. And basically anything else Star Wars.

Season 3 of Rings of Power. And finally Magician's Nephew is being adapted. My favorite Narnia book.

lots of upcoming stuff.

Currently watching the Scarpetta series on Prime that I was looking forward to, and it bums me out that it's not exactly like I imagined from the books, but that's on me and it's a pretty good series. (Like, I think the sister wasn't this prominently featured in the books if my memory serves me correctly.)

I just finished Vladimir on Netflix and loved it! Rachel Weisz is amazing in it and I love her.

Both of these shows have good representation of lesbian characters, fyi.
