I have a hard time rooting for Batman these days. People complain about Superman being overpowered. But Batman is just a wealthy dude with trauma using his wealth to work out his trauma. The fact that he does some good things with it doesn't change him being a rich dude vigilante. That's frankly a little scary.

Yeah.

That kind of character hits differently now. People have seen too many rich dudes who could've been heroes in their own way, but somehow chose not to, for Reasons.

That is part of the reason I could never really get into Batman.

I see the altruistic billionaire trope as one more suspension of disbelief necessary to enjoy comics. Like random lightning bolts and chemicals giving people powers, child sidekicks being good parenting, and aliens evolving to look exactly like humans and earth animals.

SA

But also, you may want to check out Absolute Batman! The premise of the story is that there's an alternate universe where Bruce is a blue-collar worker who uses Batman to fight the wealthy corporations and elite.

Not OP but that actually sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out, thanks!

Then you should be worried about Oliver Queen, not Bruce.

Depends on how its written, for me. If the writing makes it clear that he has a genuine desire to make the world a better place - a genuine desire to protect people and facilitate societal change for the better - then that's the kind of character I love way more now, in 2026, than I would have in 2006. I can easily forgive him for not always going about it in the healthiest way, due to his own trauma, as long as I sincerely believe he's trying, and that at least half of his motivation is coming from a place of wanting to do good, even if the other half is all tangled up in a bunch of grief and maladaptive coping impulses. The Batman (2022) does a great job of this, IMO.

With that said, I do really hope that in the sequel film, Bruce is shown making real efforts at using his wealth and status to facilitate positive change in Gotham. He can hate ever minute of it, and based on the version of him we see in The Batman, it seems likely that he will hate every minute of it, considering how deeply uncomfortable he looks in his own skin whenever he has to appear in public as Bruce Wayne. But I think we need to see him making an effort on that front, and not just as Batman. But the 2022 film was so good that I do have some hope that the sequel will actually deliver on that front.
