I mean, yeah, but the whole concept of superheroes is based in vigilantism. And while it might be something I root for in fiction, in reality, I wouldn't really be on board with that kind of thing. Batman is pretty messed up, but there are a lot of really messed up things in Gotham. If you think about the child soldiers, the chemical warfare, whatever the fuck is going on with Arkham at any point, and the city corruption outside the framework of the DC universe or the comic book conventions, it can get really disturbing.
If one of the Walton family (of Wal-mart) dressed up as a big raccoon or something and started beating up shoplifters, people wouldn't be okay with it. Probably. Maybe. (If it was Taylor Swift as a snake beating up cheaters or something, yeah, all bets are off.)
