Yeah, I feel like American culture in general has taken a hard swerve toward prudishness in the past 10-15 years. It wasn't like this when I was growing up, even (I'm an American). And U.S. culture is generally just more uptight than lots of other places in the world.

It's gotten to the point where, when I see someone put in their profile that they're from some non-U.S. country (especially non-English-speaking), I kind of let out a sigh of relief because they're much more likely to be chill and proship-by-default (but also just give no fucks about the whole anti/proship debate in general). Having a non-U.S. country in someone's bio is one of the easiest ways I've found to quickly suss out their attitude toward fictional content. It certainly beats squinting at a bunch of yellow flags trying to figure out if someone is a crypto-anti or not...
