Yeah, I got it better now: “Love songs that really sound like a dom talking about their sub in a clearly loving, healthy, non-sexual way”.

Yeah! Like you'd think maybe given gendered roles maybe songs by male singers have more of that? To which I present: Grenade Bruno Mars and Hozier Take Me to Church, both sung for very different audiences and both extremely not dominant. The reason why 'no sex songs' was because those aren't really about relationships or dynamics and 'I wanna tap that, make out with me, lemme smash' is... not inherently romantic or loving or even particularly dominant.

Right, those two exact two songs actually popped into my head as I was considering this.

Have you come across many love songs that sound like a sub talking about their dom’s love and devotion?

I’m wondering to what extent this has to do with songs generally treating love as a form of submission or at least an overwhelming experience that leaves you out of control.

DA

Can't think of explicitly sub to their dom songs, but most love songs tend to take the submissive-r role even if it's not in a D/s relationship and are usually singing toward someone that they pedestal. They want them, they need them, they give all of themselves and all of the power to their object of affection...

I wonder how much of it is the reverse too. Dominance being relegated to creepy rapey things and seen as inherently sexual and toxic in the toxic masculinity way, when it doesn't have to be.

Very nicely put.

I think there’s a lot about what’s left unsaid too. I think certain “creepy” songs get divisive because some listeners are hearing it as a genuine manipulation and crossing of boundaries, while others are hearing it as a sort of dominance game. Making it unambiguously non-creepy and non-abusively-controlling but still clearly dominant … all that in a single song’s lyrics feels like something you’d have to go out of your way to finesse.

Thanks, I think that last one is the closest to what I was imagining would fall in that space.

I guess what I’m trying to home in on is the various factors in portraying love through song: what would make a “character” (whether the singer or their partner) sound both clearly dominant and clearly loving.

Banging this out in like 5 minutes, but

'I love making your eyes light up'
'I love making you smile'
'I ask who brought this charmer here'
'and you laugh and say you're mine'

'You say you'll give me all of you'
'I say that I'll accept'
'You look at me like I'm your world'
'and I have no regrets'

'I love the way you lay in my arms and lay your heart bare'
'I love the way you trust me with your anxieties and fears'
'I love the way you look back at me to make sure I'm still there'
'You are precious treasure to me, beautiful and rare'

It's super easy and yet...

It does seem like there should be plenty. And yet…

I’m interested in why that might be.

I'm glad this is puzzling someone else besides me and other anon in the thread and it's not just us lol

This is a super interesting thread and topic. I have nothing to add really but I've enjoyed your kind of thinking out loud and puzzling through this with the anon, and I agree that in general it is a fun puzzle to ponder.
