My whole family watched that show and my mother used to say that the characters would be absolute bores and the story often unwatchable, except Duchovny and Anderson were just so damn good they elevated everything.

Replicate Mulder and Scully and you may have something. But good luck with that - they aren't The Mothership for nothing.

Honestly, she's not wrong. They really carried the show on a lot of fronts. There were some great episodes and storylines, sure, but a lot of it relied on Mulder and Scully and the chemistry they had with each other.

Yeah, I mostly agree with your mom on that. I balk a little at Duchovny being "so damn good," because his acting was really not great IMO, but somehow it still really worked for the character, and the chemistry between the two leads made it somehow feel right that Mulder was the way he was.
