I have never in my life read an E.M. Forster novel. I feel like I may have failed at literature somewhere.

Hm. Well. I've never heard of E. M. Forster, so... I think you're fine, non.

My flabbers are gasted at this comment!

Me neither. I vaguely recognize the name of one of his books (A Room With A View) but I have no clue what it would be about.

I'm the opposite. I know the name but I probably could not have linked it with this book (though I do recognize the title).

Same, though I vaguely recognize the titles a few comments below reference. If those are his books I think depending on your taste in authors, you and I are not missing out.

Tangentially, a while ago I embarked on a quest to read as many sci-fi "classics" as I could to find out what people in fandom were talking about/referencing. I'd gotten 1984 and Brave New World in high school, but then blanked out for about a decade. So I went back - Dune, Ender's Game, Stranger in a Strange Land, Wizard of Earthsea. I hated all of them. So, by now I'm convinced that whenever a selling point of an author's works is "but they're classics of [genre]!!" I'll have to say sorry, nope, don't care. Especially if the genre is not to my taste anyway, see Jane Austin.

Huh, I don't think of him very often, but I guess he is still high in the canon of English Literature.

I'd be curious if there are specific reasons you've never read any of his novels. Have you tried and not finished? Is there something about the style or subject matter that just doesn't appeal?

(Since I don't pretend to be that well read, having never tried his work doesn't feel like a big deal for me. I do feel some meager shame about other authors or works I've never read, but it's a more esoteric list.)

Why E.M. Forster in particular? I think his writing is pretty accessible if you wanted to try one, though I like A Passage to India and Maurice more than A Room with a View.

+1

I'm not generally big into The Classics™ but I love A Passage to India.

Well, unless you have a terminal illness and are likely to die tomorrow... just read one?

You haven't failed because...you still can!
Room With a View is delightful. Maurice (pronounced Morris) is also quite nice. Where Angel's Fear to Tread made me kind of sad.
My very favorite is Howard's End.
Give him a try! :D

Bahh! Put them on your shit list! Revel in the fact you've never read them! Don't let public opinion beat you down, or tell you who you can or should read! You aren't lesser nor have you failed in any literary way for never have read them! IT MAKES YOU BETTER, I SAY! I Declare it!

I've watched two movies based on his novels and haven't read any of his works.
