OP.

I’ve heard a few horror stories from my wlw friends and how intense wlw fandom spaces can get so while I’ve not had that experience I still get you. I’ve found my little corner of the fandom with those who understand how I feel without needing to dismiss my experiences so it’s cool. It was just wild to start with.

I can for sure see how Ilya works for people, unfortunately he hit one too many real life reminders and I spent my time watching the show going ‘ugh’ than being able to enjoy him or his romance with Shane. It’s not him being problematic or messy as I like plenty of messy characters, he was just a little too real for me, but hey it happens.

AH maybe I can enjoy Ilya as a character more than you it's simply because he's a man and not a woman. The fact that the gender is different from that of the people I had first hand experience with is possibly a huge buffer that allow my brain to distance the "reality of the character" from the "reality of my IRL experience".
Possibly why a loooot of queer women prefer exploring mlm ships than wlw ones. If it's too close to your life experience/identity it can become pretty upsetting pretty easily. IDK though, it's just food for thoughts /shrugs

Glad you found a place to express yourself without judgement! Hope you'll have fun in it :D

OH, and random question: what did you think of Scott Hunter/Kip? I thought it was maybe too tropey for me, but ultimately very sweet. I like Scott's character a lot, but I'm still unsure if I enjoyed the relationship, aha.

OP.

Yeah that's likely part of it, he reminded me of the first few guys I, well calling it dating is way too much for what it was but like a lot of queer guys back then my first experiences with other men was hooking-up which more often than not doesn't end well. As you said, just a little too close to what I went through irl before I got old enough to spot the tells and before I met my current partner. But like you some people will jive with that and that's fine.

I really liked Kip/Scott, I thought they were cute and I think there's some level of I wish my secret hook-ups had been more like that than the reality lmao. It's still idealistic but didn't hit a 'oh I've been there' thing.
